In loving memory of

Steve Gibbons
January 21, 2016

Remembering a friend... For those of you who do not know, I have an older brother named Steve, but this is about my "other brother" Steve - Steve Gibbons. With the passing of a close friend and business associate of 35 years, it is difficult to try and summarize the life and relationship in a few, but meaningful words. Steve was hospitalized on New Year's Day, diagnosed with inoperable and terminal cancer on January 3rd, taken to hospice on January 6th and died on January 21st. Age 57. He was as loyal as he was stubborn. He was as solitary as he was solid. He was an incredibly good, self-taught programmer. He was a great problem solver and process developer. He was happiest when involved with his many computers and electronic gadgets while listening to Harry Chapin music. He loved his beer. I worked projects with Steve from California to Washington, D.C.; from Minnesota to Texas, and the one common denominator was that each project needed some unique software fix quickly. Steve was always up to the challenge. As I sat with Steve through his last 21 days, we reminisced about projects, people and places. We laughed a lot. There were no tears and no complaints. He accepted his situation and is role in how he got there. He made sure that I knew what he wanted done when he was gone and what he wanted while he was waiting to die - Coors Light in a screw-off aluminum can and a Braums banana milkshake! Thank you, Steve, for allowing me to be there for you. You will be missed my "other brother". As you have said so many times, "Onward and Upward". Steve wanted to be cremated with no funeral or memorials. I have honored these wishes, but would add that if you are so inclined to remember him, a gift to your local hospice provider of choice would be appropriate as they took exceptionally good care of Steve in his final days.
