Buster Wilkes, age 69 of Round Rock, Texas went to be with his Savior and Lord on June 5, 2016. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, at St Vincent DePaul Church in Austin with Fr. Ranjan Cletus as celebrant.
Buster was born to Doyle S. and Helen E. Wilkes on October 10, 1946 in Nashville, Tennessee. While attending Nashville schools, he played varsity football and held various part-time jobs including stories to tell from one at the Grand Old Opry. He joined the U.S. Army and was a paratrooper. He was discharged in 1968. He assisted his parents in moving to Austin with the intention of returning to Nashville, However, there was a new company in Austin that was hiring so he gave it a try. Thirty years later, Buster officially retired from IBM. He traveled frequently while working in various departments, the last being in new products.
Buster married Janie Knauf at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on August 26,1972 in Muenster, Texas. The couple made their first home in Austin. They built a home and moved to Round Rock in 1978.
Three sons kept the Wilkes very involved in sports, especially baseball and soccer. Buster served on the Board of Directors of the Round Rock Kiwanis Little League for several years before being named commissioner in 1995 and 1996. This league had over 1000 youngsters participating at all levels. No child who wanted to play was denied the chance because scholarships were solicited and made available. Buster was very proud that the Challenge league for special needs children was re-established and funded during his tenure as commissioner. He was an active leader in Little League long after his sons were no longer playing.
Buster was a loving and devoted husband and a wonderful Dad. He is survived by Janie, his wife of 43 years, and sons Andy, Nick, and Matt Wilkes of Round Rock and Tiffany Neafus Wilkes of Austin. Buster was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Betty Jinnette and Beverly Peterson and brother Biff (Doyle Jr.) Wilkes.
