Edward M.D.
October 6, 1924 - August 23, 2015

Edward Muray Shapiro, M.D. of Houston, Texas, died peacefully in his sleep on August 23, 2015, at the age of 90.  In the way he lived his life and conducted himself during his final days, he was an inspiration to his family and friends and was the finest of role models.
When Ed was still in his teens, his family moved to Houston from Denver, Colorado, where he was born.  He attended San Jacinto High School and played in the position of end on the school's football team.  After high school, he attended the University of Colorado for one year before enlisting in the Army Air Corps, serving honorably for three years until the end of World War II.  During his service while stationed in Pennsylvania, he met and married Ruth Shapiro, and "Ruthie" and "Eddie" became inseparable.  After the war, they studied together at the University of Texas in Austin before moving to Galveston where Ed attended medical school.  Their son Adrian and daughter Stefanie were both born during that time.  Following his training, he began work in his specialty of dermatology in Pasadena and continued practicing there for 55 years until his retirement at the young age of 85.

In his forties, Ed began a pastime that would give him and all who knew him pleasure for the next 50 years:  painting pictures.  "Original" E.M. Shapiro oils, watercolors and acrylics hang generously in the homes of many a family member and friend.  After Ruth's death in 1987, Ed married the second love of his life, Dorothy "Dodie" Rosmarin, and they lived a wonderful life together for more than 25 years.   After Ed's retirement, he continued to paint, take classes, attend weekly meetings of the Pasadena Rotary Club (where he was proud to be a member for more than 50 years), and spend as much time as possible watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up.

He is predeceased by his parents, Sara and I.B. Shapiro, his brothers Bob and C.J., and his first wife Ruth.  He is survived by his wife Dodie Rosmarin Shapiro; children Adrian and Dianna Shapiro, Stefanie and Robert Hagemann; stepchildren Susie, Mickey, Kenny and Judy Rosmarin; grandchildren Ian and Andrea Hagemann, Eric and Lori Hagemann, Benjamin and Lauren Shapiro, Ruben Shapiro, Eden Shapiro; and great grandchildren Sophie, Oliver, Lucy Hagemann and Ava Shapiro.

A graveside service will be held at 9:30 am, Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at Emanu El Cemetery, 8341 Bissonnet, Houston.  His family would like to thank his caregivers at Brookdale Plaza Galleria, particularly "Bami" for her devoted care in his last days and the caring staff at Season's Hospice.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ronald McDonald House, American Heart Association or the charity of your choice.
