Dr. Frank Gottschalk
October 17, 1945 - November 29, 2019
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Frank immigrated with his wife Karen and sons to Dallas, Texas in 1984 where he joined the faculty of the Orthopedic Department at UT Southwestern Medical Center, where he earned the rank of Professor. He trained as a surgeon in South Africa and subsequently in Switzerland, Germany, as well as a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland. He retired in 2016 after 32 years of service at UT Southwestern. During his career, he treated thousands of patients. His professional career was highlighted by more than 70 published scientific papers, abstracts and book chapters. He had an incredible passion for teaching and trained countless numbers of medical students, physical therapy students and orthopedic residents. He inspired all of his sons to be involved in the medical field, with two of them pursuing Orthopedic Surgery and one a career in Biotech.
Frank's work ethic and moral compass were unrivaled, and he passed his values on to his children and their many friends. He travelled the world and shared this love with his family. He visited and lectured on six of the seven continents.
Frank Gottschalk, M.D., beloved husband, father, & grandfather passed away on November 29, 2019 at the age of 74. He is survived by his wife Karen Gottschalk, married over 47 years; his brother and sister-in-law Dennis and Janet Gottschalk of Auckland, New Zealand; his son Adrian and wife Amy and their children: Jacob, Marin, and Analise of Wellesley, MA; his son Hilton and wife Jessica and their children: Chance and Ella of Austin, TX; and his son Michael and wife Kim and their: children Reese and Tyler of Atlanta, GA.
Frank seemed larger than life and impacted so many people in his life. His legacy carries on through all he touched. He will be missed, and our world has lost a brilliant man, loving father, and grandfather.
