It is with great sadness that I inform you that George R. Mikhail, MD, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2013.
George graduated from the Cairo School of Medicine in Egypt. He trained in dermatology and practiced in Egypt for many years. He completed a World Health Organization Exchange Fellowship at the Graduate School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania under Dr. Donald Pillsbury and later an Exchange Fellowship at Wayne State University under Dr. Hermann Pinkus.
He came to Henry Ford in 1963 under Dr. Clarence S. Livingood. Later, with the support of Dr. Livingood and Dr. Robin Buerki, he trained in the Mohs surgery technique with Dr. Frederic Mohs in Madison, Wisconsin. He started the Mohs Surgery Clinic in 1967 at Henry Ford which was one of the very few in the country at the time. Dr.Edward A. Krull who succeeded Dr. Livingood as chairman was a strong supporter of the Mohs surgery unit and established the Mohs Surgery Section which grew to be one of the most respected in the country.
George was a giant in his field with 72 scientific publications, numerous presentations and an author of two books on Mohs Surgery.
He held leadership positions in the American College of Mohs Surgery, serving as Secretary-Treasurer and then as President of the college. He served as President of the Michigan Dermatological Society in 1980. He was elected to the American Dermatological Association, a national honorary dermatological society. He was the recipient of the Distinguised Career Award from the Henry Ford Medical Association in 1980 and the Distinguished Achievement Award by the Americal College of Mohs Surgery in 1992
He was not only a great surgeon , but also a superb dermatopathologist and clinician. He was a wonderful teacher to numerous residents, staff and fellows.
He will be dearly missed by colleagues, staff, residents, patients, friends and family.
He is survived by his loving family, wife Elizabeth and daughter Marianne. He was preceeded in death by his beloved son Michael.
