In loving memory of

Mitchell Glen Mooney
February 7, 1957 - January 13, 2020

Mitchell Glen Mooney was born in Germany in 1957, to Betty and Jake Mooney. He grew up in Houston, Texas, with his younger brother Russell. He graduated from Northbrook High School, where he played the tuba in the marching band.

He attended Baylor University, becoming an active member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and the film club.

In 1980, he moved to Austin, back when it was still weird, working many different jobs and touching the lives of his co-workers and friends. He worked for Twin Liquors since 1998, sharing his love and knowledge of beer, wine and spirits with thousands of customers and friends.

Mitch loved history, film and music, and freely shared his opinion on all of them. He also loved to travel, especially to Santa Fe and San Francisco. Mitch had a huge heart and a razor-sharp wit, which he shared with everyone.

Mitch was preceded in death by his parents Betty and Jake. He is survived by his brother Russell and sister-in-law Pat, his nephew Kip (and his wife Sheeva), his niece Mallory (and her husband Chris), and his countless friends.

If a man's wealth can be judged by his friendships, then Mitch was the richest man in town.

"Years ago at a trade show I was working a table with some Australian clients that I brokered- Leeuwin Estate and d'Arenberg. Mitch came by, and when he realized they were Aussies he launched into a pitch perfect rendition of Waltzing Matilda, with the complete and correct lyrics. Needless to say the Aussies were ecstatic and impressed. That's what Mitch did- he always made everyone smile. We'll miss you big guy! Steve Koppelman"

"Mitchell lived on the street behind me and we shared many classes together growing up, including marching band. I haven't seen Mitchell since we graduated from Northbrook High School, but I clearly remember his good nature, easy smile. quick wit, and genuine kindness. It's gratifying to know from those who knew him longer than I did that he retained those endearing traits for a lifetime. That's a blessing."

"I met Mitch my first day on the Job with Glazers in 1996. He was in Antoinette's shop and a dear friend of hers. They are now together again. Funny.... Mitch was so tall he could reach the top shelves of her store and that was his thing at the time and as always he made going to her shop fun. Mitch and I had on ongoing joke about the brand Yellowtail. He claimed it would not sell in his store (#2) and I claimed it would. The bet was I would buy him Dinner at Sullivan's if he did not sell out the Chardonnay in 30 days. So he put it in and it sold all the way down to the last bottle. He left that last bottle on the bottom rung and would not allow me to pull it up because there was only one day left in the month and he wanted to win. I bought that bottle and we laughed and laughed and for 20 or more years he would always tell me how I owed him dinner. We did get dinners and lunches and more over all the years but that was our thing. Mitch you will be remembered as the kindest gentlemen. My wife Laura did many many Demos in his store because she loved his stories and she felt comfortable in his presence. I owe you Mitch. You taught me things as we grew up together....Antoinette dearly loved you... and Laura and I will never forget you....we will see you on the other side.... The Hodges. "

From being the best dance partner, to sharing wine & whiskey, to listening to his stores and him listening to ours... Mitch always made us feel so incredibly loved and in the moment. We miss him so much already. We love you Mitch, say hi to Ms. Piaf for me."

"I was lucky enough to share dinners, wines and conversations with Mitch for over 15 years. He was my dearest friend and constant source of friendship. Big hearted and always a welcoming smile. I will miss him but feel privileged to have known him as long as I did. I'm sure he's smoking a cigar, drinking some single malt scotch and talking to Billie Holiday about this, that and whatever. Love you my friend-know you are missed by many. "
