"Dear Judy, lifelong friend,I will miss you so much. My grandfather Dr. Joseph Is and d delivered us in his hospital. Our mothers were friends. We went to Raider St. kindergarten. Later famed artist John Wesley Hardrick drove us in his cab. It was only job he could get at the time. Then we went to School 87. Every morning all us Black children in the neighborhood stood on corners waiting to be bussed to 86 because segregation kept us from attending the White school nearby. True to what we heard at home, Still children, we debated whether Adlai Stevenson or Dwight Eisenhower should be elected. And thank goodness! School 87 and its teachers were phenomenal When we got to Shortridge-some of a few Black students- we were more than competitive. Judy becamone of the only Blac students who worked on Th school radio station. We both went to Indiana U. Both majored in English. We became teachers. We celebrated our 60th birthday together. When we became tech savvy in later years, we sent each other texts, called to enjoy a laugh and share family news. Bless Judith Ritchie Waugh for her friendship first, and then for her incredible accomplishments. BTW- Judy was the only person I ever knew who could wear a white blouse to school, play out doors until the street lights went on, then go home still wearing a clean white blouse. Bless you, dear Friend. Alice J. Palmer"
