Carlyle Austin Goddard, age 95, passed away peacefully at home on July 8, 2015. Carl was born in Vermont to Carlyle Johnson Goddard and Elva Emmons Goddard. He was the oldest of five siblings. The family moved to the Knoxville area when Carl was seven. After graduating from Central High School in 1938, he enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1939, serving in the North Atlantic and South Pacific during WWII. After discharge, Carl married Irene Batt, from Buffalo, NY and returned to the Knoxville area where he went to work for Union Carbide. He worked at both K-25 and Y-12 until he retired after 30 years.
Carl was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church where he served as a church leader until his death. He also served as Boy Scout Leader of the troop there for over 10 years. Summers were spent camping in Maine with his children and visiting other relatives. After retirement, he kept busy volunteering at Ijam's Nature Center, becoming a Master Gardener, and woodworking.
Carl was pre-deceased by his parents; first wife Irene; brother Frelan who died in France during WWII; and sister Virginia. He is survived by wife Jan; sons, Carl and wife Missy of West Virginia, Jim and wife Angela of New Hampshire; daughter Lynn and husband Jim Dobbins of Dallas; sister Barbara of Knoxville; brother Robert of Maine; grandchildren, Emily of North Carolina, Jonathan of Cleveland, Tennessee, Timothy of Dover, New Hampshire, and Amanda and Emma, both of West Virginia.
The family would like to thank UT Hospice, particularly Dr. Gregory Phelps, and nurse Chasity Patterson for their excellent care. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 17th at 2:00 pm at St. Thomas Episcopal Church off Merchant's Drive, with Interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 5401 Tiffany Road, Knoxville, TN 37912, the Carl & Jan Goddard Scholarship Fund at Knoxville Montessori School, 4311 Kingston Pike, 37919, or the charity of your choice. "Jan -
My heart goes out to you and your family during these hard life changes. I hope that you are able to find peace and solace within those that you love and that you know there are many walking beside you with a warm hand to hold. Your "family" at KMS will always be with you..."

"Dear Jan,
I volunteered at Ijams Nature Center and worked with Carl on several projects. It was a joy to work with him because he was so pleasant and just an all around nice guy. My prayers are with you at this sad time.

"My heart goes out to the whole family, especially Jan and Aunt Barbara as you feel the loss of his everyday presence in your lives. Jan, you two showed us the glow of profound love and acceptance. You have been a blessing coming into our family, and I am ever grateful that you agreed to share your life with all of us. Aunt Barbara, I know what joy you had with your brother, even climbing into windows together. Uncle Robert, I'm sorry you've lost another brother now. I wish you lived closer where we could spend more time together. On the other hand, Mom and Uncle Austin and Uncle Frelan are having a great reunion!
Chip, Jim, and Lynn, my heart goes out to you as you are faced with another great loss. Your parents were wonderful people, and I have so many fun memories of the times we all spent together so many years ago. I particularly recall Uncle Austin outside at night with antlers at the windows scaring the daylights out of me and everyone laughing.
I am in California with Jessie right now and won't be able to join you in person on Friday, but I will be holding the whole family tightly in my thoughts and will be with you in spirit. We have all lost a loving and wonderful man. We were lucky to know and love him."
