In loving memory of

Robert Baum

Robert Baum, 75
Robert "Ducky" Lee Baum, 75, passed away on Monday, February 27, 2017 at his home in Paradise Valley, Arizona, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 18, 1942 in Morton, Illinois, the 4th son of the late Otto and Mary Baum. After graduating from Morton High School in 1960, he began his career as a bricklayer apprentice. He quickly began to take a keen interest in his father's business, Otto Baum and Son's Masonry.

Ducky married the love of his life, Christine Schupbach, on January 1, 1966 in
Phoenix, Arizona. They recently celebrated 51 years of marriage.
In 1983, Ducky moved his family to Phoenix to help run Sun Valley Masonry.
He will be fondly remembered as a loving husband, a faithful father to his 4 children
and an amazing grandpa to his 16 grandchildren. He was a family man who will
leave a wonderful legacy in his children and grandchildren.

Ducky will be remembered for his unconditional love of his family, his unwavering
faith in God, his dedication to his employees and the masonry industry and his
charitable works. He was a member of the Apostolic Christian church of America for
over 50 years. His faith in Jesus Christ was at the core of who he was and was
evidenced by how he lived his life. His family, church family, friends and employees
were dear to his heart. His zest for life and genuine love for people was magnetic.

For 60+ plus years, Ducky's strong work ethic and integrity in business has been a
guiding force behind the growth and success of two of this countries leading
masonry contracting businesses, Otto Baum and Sons of Illinois and Sun Valley
Masonry of Arizona. On January 18, 2017, he was inducted into the National
Masonry Hall of Fame. Ducky's daily examples of innovation, dedication,
perseverance, loyalty, honesty, integrity and faith were an inspiration to all who
knew him.

"Words can't express what an influence Ducky has been in my life. I have so many memories of growing up in your house, overnights, church, going to grandma Baum's with your family. He was such an example of Christ to me! His faith was not just words but action!! The hands and feet of Jesus! I always said Ducky would give the shirt off his back if someone truly needed it. Helping families that were underprivileged, picking up Ray every Sunday for church, being my Sunday School teacher. He was always trying to get us to laugh when we'd come over, Stefanie and Stacey would just roll their eyes!! He was a crazy driver!! I remember holding on for life in the jeep!! Ha ha Praise God that we will see Ducky again in heaven!! May God bless you and keep you ALL!! Make His face shine upon you and give you PEACE? Love Always, Becky"

Dave and Judy Kelch wrote on Mar 4, 2017:

"Ducky Baum was a force of good in the world. For those of us fortunate to have known him, let us take up his energy and his goodness and continue to spread his goodwill among all we know. It's impossible to describe him in mere words (generous, industrious, humble, kind, loving, and more), for he was multiple symphonies of all that is inspiring. Let's not be sad, but celebrate what he has left to all of us. His "relentless pursuit of excellence" will remain with us always. With fond remembrance, Dave & Judy"

"I will always cherish the moments when Ducky would take time out of his day to talk when I would be at the house. When including Michelle and I in the Easter gatherings Christine and Ducky hosted, we always felt welcomed as part of the family. Anyone who was in Ducky's company, I'm confident would agree with me that he had a presence about him that would inspire you to be upbeat and positive. I can only imagine all of the lives he influenced and that will continue from his passing on a positive and affirming legacy. My life is richer for having known Ducky and Christine these past 20 years."

Bart Rinkenberger wrote on Mar 3, 2017:

"Baum Family, I will never forget visiting Ducky over 30 years ago as a young boy. My father took me into Ducky's office and the first thing i noticed was a well worn Bible on the corner of this desk. It is evident that he accessed and applied the Biblical principles in his life. I hope my life will be like Ducky's. Jesus reigns. Bart Rink."

Bob Morgan wrote on Mar 2, 2017:

"Ducky and I were classmates and friends throughout our years in elementary school and high school in Morton. Throughout my time at U of I and for years thereafter, I was back to Morton and got together with the high school gang and Ducky was always there. We usually had a Thanksgiving touch football game at the Jr. High School field during those years. I worked for Otto Baum and Sons one college summer as a hod carrier probably due to a good word from Ducky to Otto. I was a welcome visitor to Otto's farm where Ducky attempted to instruct me in milking cows and where we occasionally strayed into the basement of the farm house where Otto was aging homemade wine, I think it was an Otto Baum truck that was used to transport an old wooden privy to the front lawn of MTHS one dark night. Lots of fun and fond memories. We'll all miss him. My condolences, Bob Morgan"
