Leon J. Szarkowski
September 25, 1919 - July 25, 2012

Leon J. Szarkowski, age 92, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, surrounded by his loving military family at the N.J. Veterans Memorial Home at Menlo Park in Edison, N.J.


Leon was the beloved husband of Virginia (nee Orbaczewski) for 68 years. Dear father of Leonard Szarkowski and Patricia Ferguson. Also survived by four grandchildren.


Leon was a member of the United States Navy during World War II. His home town at the time of his entry into the Navy was Camden, N.J. Leon began active military service on March 23, 1944. He served aboard the USS Markab (AD21) as a Machinist's Mate Second Class.


He was awarded the following decorations and citations: American Theater Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, WWII Honorable Service Lapel Button, and the Good Conduct Medal. Leon was released from active duty on May 11, 1946.


After his military service, he worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania until his retirement in August of 1978.
