"To my dear friend Ruth and her family.
Since the day I met Mary I felt her loving embrace. With her beautiful smile and her quick wit at the ready, I was always excited when Ruth told me she and Bob were coming to Houston to visit. Her fond recollections of Iowa and her wonderful life as a mom and wife made me feel like I knew the whole family. We drank wine, ate cheese, and laughed and laughed. I will miss her greatly."
"To the Devine family:
I am thinking about you today. It undoubtedly will be a very difficult one for you. Mary and Bob welcomed me into your home so lovingly as many have already said. They will remain a special part of my life! Treasure your memories! Love to all."

" Dear Divine Family: Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your mother. I have fond memories of Mrs. Divine while growing up in Maquoketa. She always made me feel welcomed in her home. Although now it may seem silly but to me it was fantastic to be introduced to licorice as a straw in a bottle of soda. I will never forget the first time she gave me a bottle of root beet with a red licorice straw...out of this world to an eight year old. She had the gift of being a wonderful baker, too. I loved her cinnamon frosted cookies which she baked for Sacred Heart School. I have her recipe but they don\'t taste as good as the ones she made! May warm and heartfelt memories sustain you during this difficult time. Julia Otting Ardell "
