"Cal and family, Mary directed the choir in singing "E'en So Lord Jesus, Quickly Come," where the lyrics remind us, "And night shall be no more," for "Christ shall be our all!" Now Mary beholds the light of Christ. I am so grateful for all the good times: last-minute outings for supper, hilarious mime games, and lots of laughter. I will always hold dear those times when my ship would be in port and you were there within moments to take me on liberty. In Christ's love, Dave Schilling"

"Kristy , was good to see all the pictures of Mary. She looks so young. We never got to Hawaii to visit them so sorry we couldn't make it. But always enjoyed there visits to us when they came back to Iowa. She will be missed by all but she is with her savior who she loved dearly. So sorry."

" Friends for over 50 years, our hearts go out to the Uhlig family. We remember those times in El Paso when Kristy and Dave were babies and the fun we had playing cards. We attended church together as we did again in New Jersey. Mary was so talented and such a good friend. We were honored to be Marianne?s godparents. So many great times and memories. May it comfort you to know that she is with her Lord and Savior singing in the Heavenly choir now and watching all of us that loved her dearly. Lynn and Jim Hutcheson "

"Dear Cal, Kristy, Dave and Grete...Mom, Dad, Jon and I are so sad and shocked to hear of Mary?s passing! What a wonderful person she was and we all have such great memories of her. I have a wonderful, vivid memory of a Rathjen trip back to NJ in 1981...Mary was playing ?The Rose? on the piano at your house, and Kristy and I were singing melody and harmony at the top of our lungs. Another great memory is playing waffle ball in Shenandoah and Cal & Mary, Russ & Marilyn drinking wine at a picnic table. She will forever be in our hearts. Our love and prayers are with you. Sara Rathjen, Russ & Marilyn, and Jon"

"Mary?s death is sad, a shock, and a blessing! Mary and I were first cousins. We went to school ( 1st- 8th) grades together. Our high school and college years I kept in contact, thru my mother. We both were married the same month and year. Years later, we enjoyed getting together on her visits back to Iowa. Mel and I will remember the good times we had with Cal and Mary the 5 times we traveled to Hawaii after our retirement. I am glad I got to visit with Mary in August. Mary was a talented, smart, kind, and interesting individual. Our sympathy and God?s blessings to Cal and Mary?s family."

Michelle L Coyle wrote on Mar 27, 2020:

"Sad to hear of her passing. I can still hear her leading our Sunday School singing at Luther Memorial and actually have thought of her recently. She told me once that she started the children singing especially at Christmas because the Christian hymns and songs could be lost in one generation. We hadn't had any singing in Sunday School for quite a few years and just recently started again. We were collectively talking about members in the past that were involved in the music in our church and Mary Uhlig was one of them. May God's peace and comfort be with Cal and her family. "

Meredith Ray wrote on Mar 27, 2020:

"My ?Aunt? Mary directed the children?s choir, nurtured my love of singing and she had perfect pitch. I remember many aspects of her home vividly, the stairs and the dollhouse. She was just an all around wonderful (honorary) Aunt. I always looked up to Kristy and Marianne(y) and thought of Davey as an older brother. Aunt Mary had great fashion sense and I got some of the girls? clothes. I thought I was so lucky and just a real fashion plate. Cal and Mary were loving friends to my parents and made our move to NJ so much better. We joined the church because of her. She was a very important person in my life. I wish her peace. "
