Bob was born on April 16, 1936 in Burlington, the son of Clifford and Laura Nelson Butler. He married Mary Carolyn Hall on May 28, 1960, in Burlington.

Bob attended the University of Iowa College of Engineering and served in the United States Army National Guard. He later worked at Prime Mover Company as an engineer, retiring after 35 years. He was the co-founder and President of Agape and Praise Fellowship Ministry, and a member of LifePointe Christian Faith Center.

He entered the ministry in 1982 as a licensed minister with World Ministry Fellowship in Dallas, Texas. Becoming ordained in 1987, he founded a television ministry entitled Great and Mighty Things, for 23 years. Bob was also a prolific writer. He published three books for the advancement of the Kingdom: What are You Planting...Good Seed or Weed Seed?, The Gospel Unrevealed, and Assembling the Puzzle to Christian Maturity.

Besides hunting, fishing, and golfing, Bob loved to spend time with his beloved wife and children. But the most important aspect of his life was witnessing and teaching the gospel. Bob had an evangelist's heart and did not want any person he met to not know the love and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Carolyn Butler; his three children, Barry Butler and wife, Joyce, Joy Ellen Brady and husband, Rodney, and Holly Carol Butler; one grandson, Christopher Scott Brady; and 14 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph and Russell; and his beloved daughter, Kristin LeeAnn who went to be with the Lord in April of 1990.
