Dennis Edwin Hawhee
May 23, 1941 - March 7, 2020

Grosse Pointe Farms resident, Dennis Edwin Hawhee, 78, died of natural causes on Saturday March 7, 2020. He was born May 23, 1941, in Detroit to Edwin and Marion Hawhee. He graduated from Southeastern High School and played basketball at Highland Park Community college. He transferred to Wayne State University where he was an active member of the fraternity TKE. He studied Physical Education and received a Bachelor of Science in PE and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Wayne State University. He began his career in Detroit teaching physical education. He went on to teach PE, elementary, middle and driver's education in the Grosse Pointe Public Schools for 30 years. After retiring from education, he went on to work for Balfour selling class rings at colleges in the Midwest. Mr. Hawhee enjoyed sports. He loved coaching girls and boys basketball as well as coaching his son in little league. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing tennis, golf, softball, and basketball. He loved to attend the theater with his wife and enjoyed working on his clock collection. He especially loved spending time with his family and fishing at their cottage on Hubbard Lake. He was a loyal Detroit Pistons, Tigers and MSU fan. Mr. Hawhee is survived by his son Dennis Michael Hawhee, daughter Katherine Neubrecht (Kurt), grandchildren Katelyn Hawhee, Kevin Neubrecht, Megan Neubrecht and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife Rosemary Hawhee, grandson Brandon Hawhee and his sister Helen Owens. A burial is planned for this summer in Alpena, Michigan. A memorial service to celebrate his life will take place in Grosse Pointe at a later date.
