Douglas L. Zabel, 71, of Fort Dodge passed away Friday, May 29, 2020 at his home.
Funeral services will be 1:30 Thursday, June 4, 2020 in the chapel of Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home. Burial will be in Colfax Township Cemetery, Vincent. A visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at the funeral home.
Douglas is survived by his children, Kirk Zabel of Fort Dodge and Jody (Tom) Walsh of Barnum; four grandchildren, Kasie Kangas (Jacob Seil), Zachary, Lucas and Alyssa Walsh; brother, Michael (Barb) Zabel of Humboldt and sister, Patricia (Denny) Larson-Norton of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lorenz and Beverly (Sawyer) Zabel; step-father, Herbert Thielmann and son-in-law, Calvin Kangas.
Douglas Lorenz Zabel was born in Fort Dodge on June 11, 1948. Following his education, Doug enlisted in the United States Air Force and served for 20 years before retiring in August of 1989. In 1970, Doug was united in marriage to Susie Hoover and the couple made their home throughout the US during Doug's time in the service. They later divorced. In 1996, Doug moved back to Fort Dodge. He was employed with Racing Unlimited for a period of time and later Murphy Tractor before retiring in 2012. Doug loved watching NASCAR and attending car shows.
