Alfreda Evans was born on January 28, 1930 to Wil-liam and Estella Malone in Indianapolis, IN. She was ed-ucated in the Indianapolis Public Schools and attended Crispus Attucks High School. She was the youngest of 9 children all of who have preceded her in death.
Alfreda confessed her faith in the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age at Good Samaritan Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J.T. Highbaugh Jr. She later moved her membership to Gorham Methodist Church, which is now University United Methodist Church where she became an active member for over 50 years. She sang in the Women's Chorus, worked on the Pastor Parrish committee, was a communion steward, and a member of the United Methodist Women just to name a few. Alfre-da was well loved by her church family being voted Mother of the year and celebrated down through the years. Jesus was the center of her Joy and she took her relationship with him serious. She made sure all of her children, and their children, and their children devel-oped that personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ as well.
Alfreda was married to James Hamilton Mitchell Sr. but he died shortly after the marriage. Alfreda then met Marion Evans whom she was able to enjoy over 40 years of marriage until his death in 2009.
Alfreda was a loving devoted mother of eight. She shared a special relationship with each one of her children strengthening a bond that will never be broken. This bond traveled to her 17 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren.
Alfreda worked at RCA taking an early retirement to care for "Ariel". She then became the babysitter for several, extending that love that only she could give.
Alfreda was a great cook and made sure that those cooking skills were passed on. Her hobbies included crocheting, knitting, and ceramics which she taught several of her family members to do as well. She loved to dance and showed it at family events and later this became a special bond between her and her grandchildren. Alfreda loved to travel taking her last trip with her family to Las Vegas at 88 years old.
Alfreda was the Matriarch of her family living to be 90 years old. She was affectionately known as Mamma, Grandma, Mother Evans, but to most as "Aunt AL". She never met a stranger and treated all as family. She welcomed all to the house on River-side, to her Sunday dinners, holiday meals, Wednesday prayer, or to any just wanting to stop by. She made you feel comfortable and at home. She was a listening ear and offered the finest advice. She was an amazing woman who touched the lives of so many.
Alfreda lived by the scripture "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16.
