Michael E. McCarthy, 27, of 68 Kay Street Newport, died Friday, September 10, 2004 in Walpole, Ma. Born in Newport, RI on November 19, 1976, he was the son of Edward P. McCarthy and Janet Kelly McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy was a 1995 graduate of Middletown High School and was active in football, baseball, and basketball and had been a captain of the basketball team his senior year.He was the recipient of the John Kroll Memorial Award for his dedication, leadership and unselfish play. He then graduated from Stonehill College in 1999 where he received a BA in education. He worked in Boston and San Francisco until September 11, 2001, when he returned to Rhode Island and began working as a substitute teacher in special education for area schools.Mike just began his third year as a special education resource teacher at Tiverton High School. He was also the coach for freshman football and baseball, and served as an assistant coach for varsity and JV. He was previously an assitant basketball coach at Middletown High School. Mike was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan, an active mentor and vibrant member of the community. He is survived by his parents Edward P. and Janet Kelly McCarthy of Middletown, RI, a brother Rian A. McCarthy of Middletown, R.I., a sister Kelly M. McCarthy of Newport, RI, and aunt and uncle Thomas and Ann-Marie Nevitt of Middletown, RI and several cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, September 14, at 10:00 AM in St. Lucys Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.Donations will benefit a scholarship at both the Middletown High School and Tiverton High School, they may be sent to the Michael E. McCarthy Scholarship Fund c/o Guidance Department Middletown High School, Valley Road Middletown, RI 02842.

"Mike loved Youth Ministry. He loved the kids, the activities, the talks, discussions, and the challenges. He could relate to every kid that came on every retreat. And if he couldn't relate to them at first, he took the time to get to know and understand them. And that's what I will remember most about Mike-he appreciated that everyone was unique. He made the kids on those retreats feel like they had a purpose-and undoubtedly had a lasting influence on many of them. So many kids looked up to Mike. He was easy to like and get along with. And he always made you feel like he had all the time in the world no matter who you were. The world has lost an incredibly giving person, but heaven has gained one great soul. "Mike truly embodied the definition of friendship. If you were in a room full of strangers, Mike would make you feel right at ease, comfortable, and at home. His gifts of humor,personality, simplicity, and a tremendous heart were all cherished. On our whitewater rafting trip, an exhausted crew had made its way down the mighty Kenebec River in ME, low on energy after a wild ride, Mike cut through our weary silence with an inspirational start to the Star Spangled Banner to motivate us. Soon, we began to paddle like champs again. My Stonehill years with Mike from '95-'98 were a treasure full of great times and meaning and I will always keep him close to me."
