Harold Christy Petropoulos

Middletown, RI - Harold Christy Petropoulos, of 8 Champlin Terrace Middletown, RI formerly of Ellery Road Newport, RI, died Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at RI Veterans Home in Bristol, RI. He was the husband of Rita P. Devol Petropoulos. Born in Newport, RI, on April 12, 1921, he was the son of the late Christos Peter Petropoulos and Vosio Loures Petropoulos. Mr. Petropoulos had been the owner and operator of Harolds Camera Centre on the corner of Touro Street and Thames Street for over fifty years until it closed in 1997. He was a 1938 graduate of Rogers High School and was the treasurer of his class. He joined the US Army in 1942 and served in both the European and African Campaigns earning a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his actions serving with the 449 Antiaircraft Battalion Battery D. He returned to Newport in November 1945. He was a member and Past President of the Wanumetonomy Golf Club, and had served on the Newport Bridge Commission. Mr. Petropoulos had also served on the Newport City Council from 1962 to 1965 and on the Redevelopement Agency and was its past Chairman. Harold had been on the Board of Directors of the Former Island Trust Newport Fed and an incorporator of the Savings Bank of Newport. He is a Member of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church and had served on several committees over the years. Besides his wife, he is survived by daughters Cynthia De Angelo of North Reading, MA, and Krista V. Petropoulos of Newport, RI, two brothers Peter C. Petropoulos of Newport, RI, and George C. Petropoulos of Middletown, RI, a granddaughter Madeline De Angelo of North Reading, MA, a grandson Jackson De Angelo of North Reading, MA, and nieces and nephews. Services will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2004 at 11:00 am from The Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport with a funeral service at 12:00pm in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church Thames and Brewer Streets Newport, RI. Burial will be in Island Cemetery in Newport where Military Honors will be rendered. Donations may be made in his memory to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, Thames and Brewer Street, Newport, RI 02840.
