Mercedes N. Rona, 67, of Massachusetts Avenue, Middletown, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2007 at Newport Hospital.She was the wife of the late Marcelino Rona.Born in Basey, Western Samar, Philippines, she was the daughter of the late Serafen and Justina Naraja Gacita.Mrs. Rona was a member of the Fil-Am Association of Newport County and enjoyed gardening, sewing and arts crafts.She is survived by her children, Aurora Wernik of Middletown, RI, Eufrocina Janeo, Rosa Rona, Delia Rona, Clarita Batairo, Fe Go, Leonardo Rona, Rodolfo Rona, Nestor Rona and Rufo Rona, all of the Philippines, and 25 grandchildren, including Allan Wernik, Jr. and Amanda Wernik, both of Middletown, and Michelle Plisek of Bellevue, NE.She was also mother of the late Jesus Rona, Nemisio Rona and Regina Rona.A prayer service will be held Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at 6 pm in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway in Newport.Calling hours will be held Tuesday, August 7, 2006 from 4-6 pm in the funeral home.Burial will take place in the Philippines.Donations in her memory may be made to the Fil-Am Association of Newport County, P.O. Box 6051, Middletown, RI 02842.
