Became a 8404 and medical lab technician, And have been working my way towards commissioning. I wish I could have had more years of memories, but your memory will never fade. I'm stationed at Walter Reed Bethesda. The same halls you walked, I do now. And it's a great feeling to be the LPO of serology, knowing you once had lead sailors in the same hospital . "My wife and I only recently discovered the tragic news of Captain Cote's death. We our so sorry for his wife and family's loss. There are people in this life who merely exist, and then there are those who truly live and leave a large wake in their passing. Captain Cote was defintely of the latter persuasion. I first met him at OIS in Newport in 1983 when he chased me down with a pair of khaki pants that had slipped off a hanger as I walked back from the tailors. We next served together at sister commands at NH GLakes, where we also met his very gracious wife Betty. At all times he was the epitome of humanity and ease in a leadership position and most definitely was a powerful role model to me. The world is a much smaller place without him. Our condolences to Betty and his family."

"Dear Bette, I am so sorry about Bill?s passing. I have been reading all of the notes in the guest book and I am without words. I remember back to 1963 when I first met Bill. He had been in the Navy stationed in Texas but asked for a transfer to the Air Force and to be stationed at Westover so he could be near his father who was terminally ill. I remember celebrating your wedding and I remember playing cribbage with Bill?s father. They had a special bond. I remember when Chris was born and you asked me to be his Godmother. It wasn?t long after that his father passed away and Bill transferred back to the Navy to continue his career and you all moved away. Our friendship has been long distance ever since. But since that first move from Springfield you have always stayed in touch. I loved getting your letters and the pictures of the children and on occasion you and Bill. You were back in the area in 1972 and called for a quick visit at the lake. That was when I got to meet Cheri. I never saw you again until Chris? wedding. I followed you around the world as you continued to transfer to faraway places, some that I had forgotten about but as I read the guest book it was like a summary of all of those years, all of those letters that came from so many places. All of the love, honor and trust that so many people expressed for Bill and thanking you, Chris and Cheri for your support in his career and for sharing him. You truly are an amazing family. In reading all of the accolades I cannot help but think of Bill?s father and how proud he would be to know of his accomplishments and to read these messages. Bill?s was a life well-lived and you and his children, grandchildren and great grandchild are his legacy. May you find comfort in the many memories you have and your love for each other. Our deepest sympathy to all of you. Love, Lynne and Harry Ahern"

"Mrs. Cote and family, Please allow me to convey my deepest sympathies to you on the passing of Captain Cote. As a young Sailor arriving in Newport in 1977 one of the first people I met was Cdr Cote. Over the next few years he made a significant and lasting impression on me. A leader in every sense of the word, he was there to deliver a word of encouragement, or a kick in seat depending on the requirements of the situation. I remember when my exuberance got me in trouble and I faced the XO at XOI. CDR Cote went to bat for me there, speaking to the XO about my record, performance and future potential. He saved me from Captains mast and serious consequences of NJP. After my XOI he brought me into his office and delivered a dressing down that stuck with me the remainder of my 27 year naval career. Before the Navy adopted it?s Core Values of Honor, Courage and Commitment, the CDR was living them and impressed them on me at that moment. Later when I applied to Dive School the CDR was a champion for my request. One of the ways that you take the measure of a man is how he touches the lives of those he interacts with. He touched my life and many others in a profound manner. Captain Cote may you always have fair winds a following sea and star to guide you, God Bless you and your family."

"Dear Mrs. Cote, family and friends, This is a sad time for you. I wish you the very best and as an offering of joyful remembrance, here is but one story about your husband, your father and friend. We were a contingent of young corpsmen with orders to report to the Naval Regional Medical Center, Newport, Rhode Island. We came from just about every corner of the United States. We were eager and energetic and red-blooded. We had some rough direction in life but still full of all the mischief that springs from youth. That was thirty years ago. The war in Vietnam was just a few years behind us. Jimmy Carter was president and the country, while at peace, was in a bit of malaise. For those of you old enough to remember, the Iran Hostage Crisis was the main topic. It was also a time when the military at large was not keen on the idea of a serviceperson attending college concomitantly while on active duty. However, being motivated albeit a tad wild, we wanted to take advantage of the several schools in the area and begin our college degrees. The Navy wouldn't allow this of course... unless our commanding officer gave us the green light. This was an apparently overwhelming problem because the commanding officer was inaccessible to us. Except for a commander named Bill Cote our story would have ended before it began. Maybe we initially bonded with Capt. Cote because we had heard he started out as a corpsman. Maybe we instinctively knew we had an ally in this friendly, approachable, receptive Nursing Supervisor because he was easy to relate to. Whatever the reason, we all respected Capt. Cote from the get-go. He was a mentor and role model to us before we even knew it. We requested permission to attend classes at the various local schools. Sticking his neck way, way out there, Capt. Cote didn't hesitate to make it possible for us to go to college. He said we could enroll IF we kept our "noses clean" and did our jobs with "NO complaints from the nurses and doctors". Well, we did our jobs well, no complaints there. We just couldn't seem to stay out of off-duty trouble. Nothing felonious, just the typical teenage pranks and antics...we were sailors after all. We were holy terrors to more than a few our supervisors but somehow we were allowed to stay in school. Years later, after college and nursing degrees, med school for some, distinguished military careers for others, and professionals all, we learned, from the very officers we tormented, that Capt. Cote ran blocker for us time and time again. While the other officers and supervisors tried to run us up the pole, Capt. Cote sang our praises publicly while chewing us out in private. We were growing into young men and women and he believed in us before we believed in ourselves. Now, we have Navy reunions every year. We are all good friends and shipmates still. And over the years Capt. Cote came to each of our reunions when able. It was always good to see him and he will always be a part of our reunions and our lives. While he was at the helm, he was our guidepost. He was our captain. Godspeed Capt. Cote. Brian Schultz - one of many fortunate corpsmen to serve with Capt. Cote throughout the late 70's and early 80's."
