He was the vet for our beloved dog, and in dealing with the dog who dreaded going upstairs to the office he always displayed great kindness and professional competence. He always gave us helpful and frank advice. And when the dog died, at the age of 13, Dr. Cates, even though it was a Sunday, took the trouble to return our call and arrange for the disposal of the body. I had great respect for him. I was once rhapsodizing about the skill of "my vet" to an acquaintance. She told me that my tales were as impressive as some she had about "her vet." "So much has been said about the loving care Dr. Cates had for all the animals, and rightly so. I wanted to take this moment to comment on his kindness and care of people as well. 12 years ago when I worked downstairs at Aquidneck Kennel I was diagnosed with a serious medical condition. Dr. Cates was one of the first people to offer help. He would ask me everyday how I was doing. He would educate me on the latest medical breakthroughs and medications. I found his kindness and sincerity a blessing in those dark days. I have many fond memories of the Cates family and the hours Jeremiah helped me in the store. Unfortunately, time goes on and I have not seen the good Dr as much as I would have liked. I thank God that I did see him in the office last year and we had a nice time catching up. I remember how proud he was talking of his family. Anytime my wife took our cats to see Dr. Cates he always asked how I was doing. My wife just saw him 2 weeks ago, and sure enough, as she was leaving in his kind and concerned way he asked about me. What a great man he is. Karen and family, our entire family will miss him greatly, and our hearts go out to you. But what a joy it is knowing that he lives on in all the lives he has touched."

"Dear Karen, I was deeply saddened to hear that Jerry had passed away. He was one of the last of his breed, "an old fashioned home town vet". When anyone arrived at Cates Animal Hospital, everyone knew your name and the name of your pets. Jerry was a wonderful doctor, who truly cared for and loved the animals. I was just there two weeks ago, with Lucie, Tommy & Leo, for their yearly check-ups; and as usual Jerry was his fun-loving, wise-cracking self! Karen, you both have always been there when we needed you - and have always been kind and understanding when I was being the "nervous mother". I knew that my cats were in good hands.
