Later Dr. Russo took great care and concern for both of my sons, including our youngest who was not expected to live much beyond 13. He will be celebrating his 25th birthday this July thanks again to Dr. Russo! Cumberland, RI - Dr. Pietro Russo, 75, of Cumberland, RI, died Thursday, February 19, 2009 at Oakhill Nursing and Rehab Center, Pawtucket, RI.He was the husband of Virginia Louise Sherman Russo. Born in Italy, on April 12, 1933, he was the son of the late Gerardo and Teresa Pirillo Russo.Dr. Russo owned his own pediatric practice for 40 years, retiring in 2005. He was a graduate of Messina University School of Medicine in Italy. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam conflict and later retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Dr. Russo was a member of the American Medical Association, the Rhode Island Medical Association, the Pawtucket Medical Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was an avid gardener. He is survived by his wife of 48 years and his children, Gerard A. Russo of Edmonton Alberta Canada, and Teresa Russo-Weitz of Plainsboro, NJ. He also leaves behind his twin brother Giovanni Russo, older sister Maria Teresa Russo-Florio and younger brother Gerarado Russo, Jr., all of Italy. He will be sorley missed by his grandchildren Erica Weitz, Joshua Weitz and Sacha Russo and many nieces and nephews in the United States and ItalyHe was the brother of the late Speranza Russo-Turano. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at 11:00am, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Monday, February 23, 2009, from 6-9, in the funeral home. I belive it was Dr. Russo that made me interested in medicine. For many years I dreamed of becoming a pediatrician like him. I will always remember going to him with high fevers and he would always try his hardest to console my parents. Years later in the early 1990's, I brought my first two children to him.
