"To Mrs.Bauchspies and family, We here at Ph 21 at Mass General were very sad to hear about The Colonel's passing. We were very glad that you and he were able to celebrate your life together in a formal way at the ceremony to renew your vows. He showed his courage in the manner with which he dealt with his illness, and you showed your devotion to him in being with him during his final journey. He was a teacher as well as patient to me and I learned many useful things one had to be careful though of asking him a question, you needed alot of time to hear the answer! You are in my prayers, Jan"

"Dick was a true friend and a valiant fighter--right up to the end. Our friendship began as battalion commanders together in the 82d, ripened during our years together at the Naval War College, and was nourished over the years by frequent good times who can forget those Oktoberfest parties? as our lives kept intersecting again and again. We too are glad he lived to see Brandon enter West Point, that he made his 50th reunion, and that he and Barbara were surrounded by those who loved them on the 50th anniversary of a great love story. We salute him one last time. With love and sadness, Heath & Mary"
