Mr. John Russell Gomes

"I have known Johnny, and his family, since he was a little boy living next door. He became a true genius when it came to building, racing, and fixing cars and keeping the old ones, like all of mine, safely on the road. I was profoundly upset and shocked when I drove into "Johnny's Getty" Sunday and saw the closed signs. I would usually buy gas on week days and go into the office to pay so I could talk to Rose, Jimmy, the crew and even by chance John senior. Johnny would usually be on the phone and doing two or more other jobs at the same time, even lately while being treated. But no matter, I would always get a genuine "Hi Stan" with a wave and a big friendly smile which would absolutely make my whole day. I wish I had visited more. For everyone, John, Debbie, Andrew, Rose, his crew, and all of the families, relatives and friends, I wish you Comfort, Peace, Hope and to Be Well. Johnny, you will always hold a very special place in my memories."

We moved here in 98 to open a business and after the first visit to Johnny's Getty, where he fixed something for Edie for free without even ever having met her, he was always our mechanic. There was never a better, more friendly, honest and trustworthy mechanic in the world. He once said to me, "Do you really want to spend money fixing that on an old truck like this?" What kind of mechanic says that? Absolutely the best kind! We were so impressed with him after a few visits that we had a T-shirt printed up for him that said, Johnny's Getty - It doesn't getty any better than this! We too felt special because shortly after becoming regular customers, because we were given the number to the "BAT" phone, but apparently, Johnny had the knack of making everybody feel special. That was just one of the many things that made him such a great guy. And if I ever had a vehicle broke down and was far away and couldn't get the vehicle to him, I could always call him and he would take the time to give me advice and let me know if I was being cheated by some other repair shop. He was just the greatest and he was always there for you and you could always trust him. Edie's parents had a newer car that had a problem and the dealership and several garages in Fall River could not fix the problem, so we had them take it to Johnny and he fixed it. He was absolutely the best! I remember dropping off cases of beer for him and the guys because just paying the bill and saying thanks just didn't seem like it was enough, and I felt honored to have him accept my little token of appreciation. Of course, I lost track of how many times over the years that I had stopped in there with some little problem and he took care of it free of charge. What a great guy! He was also very funny, could always make the "bad" news seem not so bad and it was always a pleasure to see him. His time on this earth was way, way too short and I have no idea if he ever realized it or not, but judging by all the tributes here, he lead an extremely rich and rewarding life. Anyone would be proud and honored to have left such a legacy, He will be truly missed and not forgotten by a great many! So, rest in peace Johnny Gomes. "I have a very short list of my favorite all-time people, and Johnny was near the very top! He was so honest that I'm sure you could leave $1,000.00 in $1.00-bills on the table in his service station, and you wouldn't need to count them when you came back to pick them up. He was a great people person, who handled his customers' stress with the greatest tact. I will never forget how he would give me the occassional bad news about the cost of a necessary repair: "About your car ..." That was all he had to say, and I knew that he was going to give me the best deal he could possibly find on parts and labor, but that it was still going to cost me. But most of the time I had a bill for routine service that was unbeatable anywhere in New England. He was also a great leader -- on the job, supervising the pinewood derby, and I'm sure on the real race track. I will very much miss Johnny. I wish Rose, Andrew, the folks at the shop, and Johnny's extended family all the best. May your memories be fond and persistent. ---Ivan Kirschner"

His answer was most emphatically, "NO." The station was already back to red again by then! He was a fellow member of the Middletown High Class of '76, and one of the nicest -- and coolest -- guys in the class. Everyone has at least one good story about Johnny. A big man with a huge heart, Johnny will be missed but never forgotten. My sincere condolences to his family and friends."

"WOW, I am shocked to hear this news. I am in Florida now, but Johnny and his team were my mechanics since I was 16 years old. I was never set up for my next visit. When I moved out of the area, I went to another Garage and I caught them taking me to the cleaners, I suspected it, and came to Johnny, and he confirmed it. The manager of the place I had gone to happened to be friends of Johnny's from the Seekonk Speedway. He fired the guy and gave me all my money back, as well as fixed what was supposed to be fixed. "One need only to read just a few of the tributes posted here or to see the volume of people who gathered at Memorial Funeral Home tonight to pay respect to their friend to realize what a wonderful person Johnny was. Tribute after tribute defined Johnny: "Caring/honest/sincere/down to earth/genuine." Johnny treated his friends and customers in the way that we all hope we'll be treated, but all too often come to the realization that he was the exception, and sadly not the rule.Over the years Johnny and his team have provided my cars with service that can be defined as nothing short of excellent. He put up with my quirks with only a minimum of good natured ribbing: "Please leave the windows up Johnny. It's spider season, and I'm not above jumping out even if the car is rolling." "How come my steering wheel shakes at 85?" "How many pounds of air should I put in this tire? 100? 150?" <--I think he knew I just didn't want to get dirty. I remember him laughing one time in particular when I picked up my parents car after an inspection because they had driven it less than 700 miles from the previous inspection.More than one person has posted how Johnny went out of his way to help them and I am no exception. My Oldsmobile kept stalling out and nothing seemed to rectify the situation. The diagnostic computer failed to identify a problem. Johnny told me that he wasn't going to charge me for a new part until he was sure that it would fix the situation. He held on to my old parts and put them back on the car rather than charge me for something I didn't need. Who else would do that for anybody?There's not a doubt in my mind-- we've lost a roll model on how to treat each other.Rosie, Andrew, Chief, Barbara, Debbie and Tricia, my heart breaks for you at this most difficult time. "I don't remember who told me to go to Johnny's; it might have been Mark Miller or Rose herself. I was touched by his kindness, honesty and friendliness. I knew he would never steer me wrong. I remember when Rose got engaged to Johnny but although it made all of us who worked with her, very sad when she left to work with Johnny, we were all happy for her. "I have known Johnny since I was a small child. When I grew old enough to ride my bike to Johnny's Getty Johnny filled up my brother (Richie Olson) and I bike tires. He was a familiar face and always had a smile on while testing out the cars he worked on he always waved. Then I had a son who is highly interested in cars. Johnny and my son Spencer liked to talk cars. He showed my son the garage and everything. It really hit hard when we found out of his passing. He was a mentor,a friend, a great person. "Rose, I am so sorry for your loss. A couple of memories. As a family with two little ones in the car, we got stranded and called Johnny. His mechanic picked us up in a flash and we all got a ride home in "Johnny's helper's truck." Needless to say, the boys were thrilled!For years we would see Johnny and the kids would always remember "Johnny's Helper." My youngest son, Dan, was so admiring of Johnny, that he aspired to work for him one day. Problem was, Dan wanted to start working for him at age 12. He really made an impression. And lastly, Rose, you could only appreciate how good Johnny made us all feel. "Hello Beautiful," he would always say to me when I dropped off the car in the morning. Made my day. "Johnny has been a part of my family whether he knew it or not. As kids with cars he could have been dishonest and raked us over the coals... he never did. He didn't mince words but his generosity and gentle spirit came across in his actions. You never had to second guess what he said was the problem or the cost as Johnny usually tried to give you a solution to solve the problem short term allowing you to prepare for what was coming. He was always right. I thought I was special because I had his "inside" number to get to him as his "public" line was always busy. How quickly I learned that I was one of many who had that inside number. One night my brother broke down on 95 and called Johnny who proceeded to spend the next four hours trying to find him. My brother was a kid who was often on a payment plan to make good with the work Johnny's crew did to his car. Johnny owed him nothing and would gain nothing by trying to find him... but he did. Sleep well my friend. Know that we grieve you deeply on earth but are thankful for all you did to bring peace to others. You are a good man and a good soul and I look forward to seeing you on the other side. May God hold you in His hands - it is time to rest."
