In loving memory of

Mrs. Maureen Gordon
November 13, 1934 - July 19, 2013

Middletown - Maureen Gordon, 78, of Middletown, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 19, 2013 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence surrounded by her loving family. Born in Isleworth, England on Nov. 13, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Hoban and Elizabeth (Gilligan) Hoban. As a child, Maureen was a survivor of the London blitzkrieg during WWII.A beloved wife and mother, Maureen is survived by her husband of 46 years, Hayes I. "Jerry" Gordon of Middletown, RI, and sons Damon, of Newport, RI, and Sean and Tyrone of Middletown, RI.In her younger years, Maureen traveled extensively as a flight attendant for BOAC. As the wife of a retired captain, USN, she raised her family while stationed all over the country and world. While living in Taiwan in the late 1960's she was a Red Cross volunteer, helping treat wounded Vietnam veterans at Naval Hospital Taipei. While living in Anchorage, Alaska, she was the secretary to the president of the Alyeska Pipeline Company during that company's initial construction phase. She spent her latter years, nearly 30 of them, working with renowned interior decorator Richard Nelson in Newport, RI.Maureen was an accomplished artist, particularly in Chinese brush painting techniques she learned while living in Taiwan. She was known to her master instructor as Mo-Go-Lee, the Chinese interpretation of her name. Her life was as colorful and creative as her works of art. If she wasn't painting, she was sewing, knitting, or beading, donating many of her pieces of work to charity. Always busy, she kept her wry British sense of humor and had a cup of tea every afternoon.Maureen had a very private personal life and her final wishes were to have a private family service and a celebration of her life at a later date.Additional information and condolences available at

"Jerry, Damon, Sean, and Ty, I was devastated to hear of Maureen's passing.I have known Maureen or Mo as I have always called her for 73 years. All through the World War II years we were inseparable, just like brother and sister always looking after one another, we were soul mates. And although in adulthood we went our separate ways we always remained friends.I shall miss the frequent emails and hearing her voice on our regular phone calls to each other, but the memories will never fade.Au revoir my dear Mo, I know we shall meet again.JohnJohn Chislett. "Jerry, Damon, Sean, and Ty, I'm so very sorry for your loss. Your wife/mom was such a talented, sweet, caring, and funny woman. It's always been obvious that family meant everything to her and she also had a natural gift of making others feel like family in her presence. Truly a very special person who will never be forgotten. You are all in my thoughts and I pray for you through these difficult times. I'm sure her loving soul is watching over you with endless concern and she's probably wishing she could smack you around on occasion. My condolences,Kevin Reynolds"
