Middletown, RI - John "Big John" Joseph Caminiti, 63, proprietor of Long Wharf Seafood died, January 26, 2014 of a brief illness at Newport Hospital surrounded by family.John was born July 19, 1950 in Columbus, OH to the late Mr. Carl Louise (Nelk) Caminiti. John moved to Newport at a young age, because his father was in the Navy and was stationed here. John was a hard worker, and started at a young age. He worked for Anthonys Seafood as a fish cutter and a truck driver. He also worked for Parascondola as a truck driver. In 1982, Mr. Caminiti opened Long Wharf Seafood, a retail and wholesale seafood market at 139 Long Wharf. Long Wharf Seafood was known for its brightly colored underwater paint scheme. In 1988 he opened a larger facility on Connell Highway expanding to include a kitchen selling prepared seafood. Long Wharf Seafood was closed on December 5th, 2013 due to illness after over 30 years in business. John was well liked by his friends, colleagues and most of all his customers. His unwavering belief in customer service and his The Customer is always right attitude made friends of many of his loyal customers.John is survived by his wife of 40 years Barbara (Correiro) Caminiti of Middletown, RI, two sons Mr. John A. Caminiti of West Warwick, RI, Mr. Jason Caminiti and his wife Erin Leary of Fall River, MA and daughter Ms. Aimee Caminiti of Newport, his sisters Mrs. Caren Lawrence of Las Vegas, NV and Mrs. Mary Dunbar of Tiverton, RI and four nieces and a nephew and five great nephews. He is also survived by his mother in law Shirley Correiro of Middletown.Calling hours will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2014, from 2-4 in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, followed by a service at 4.Burial will be private.In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his name to the American Diabetes Association 222 Richmond Street Suite 204 Providence, RI 02903 or the American Cancer Society of Rhode Island 931 Jefferson Blvd Warwick, RI 02886.
