Naples, FL - Edward M. Suggs, 71, of Naples, FL died Saturday, August 23, 2014 at Newport Hospital surrounded by his friends. Born in Newport, RI, he was the son of the late Oscar and Ellen (Campbell) Suggs. He attended Salve Regina University in Newport, RI and Swain School of Design in New Bedford, MA.Edward Served in the Army National Guard for twelve years. Edward retired from the Newport Police Department in 1990 after 20 years of service as a Sergeant and decorated officer. "Captain Suggy" was an avid fisherman and entrepreneur with numerous businesses throughout his lifetime, most recently traveling around as the King of Cotton Candy. Edward loved tending to his farm where he housed his prized buffalo, Nikki, while he resided in Rhode Island.He is survived by his son, Glenn Kulik of Naples, FL as well as many close friends whom he considered his family.Over the years Ed extended his heart and home to anyone who may have needed a helping hand, leaving a lasting impact on their lives. He will be truly missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to have had him as their friend. Calling hours will be held Thursday, August 28, 2014 from 4:00 to 7:00pm in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a time of remembrance at 7:00pm.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Edward's memory to the Hillside Charitable Organization, 8 Memorial Boulevard, Newport, RI 02840. He simply said "listen to me now" as he gave step by step instructions on how to fix it...and if we were smart, we listened. He was a man who reached out to those who were missing something ~ whether it was a parent, a meal or a place to lay their heads ~ and he made sure they were taken care of. Edward would do anything for anyone without ever truly expecting anything in return. He was a man of integrity. An honest man. He was a man who didn't need to smile at you to make you smile at him. He had the biggest heart of any man I've ever met and he kept my heart whole throughout my entire life. For that, I have been truly blessed and I will be forever grateful. I may never be able to duplicate the love and selflessness this man instilled in me beginning the day I was born, but I will spend the rest of my life trying to live as he lived ~ trying to give as he gave ~ and trying to love as he loved ~ because I can think of no greater honor than to carry on his legacy and pay tribute to the incredible one of a kind man that he has always been.An emptiness is felt in the lives of many today. A space as large as the man who filled it. But the memories are even larger. The impacts even greater. He was a man whose legacy will far outlive any one of us. He was truly loved and he will be missed dearly."
