CDR William D. Travis
August 7, 1944 - March 12, 2017

CDR. William D. Travis, U.S.N. Ret. 72, of Middletown died Sunday, March 12, 2017 at Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence, RI. He was the husband of Beverly J. (Wordell) Travis of Middletown, RI and the late Margaret R. (Potter) Travis.Born in Jacksonville, IL, he was the son of the late Forest and Dorothy (Kane) Travis. CDR Travis received his education starting with his High School Diploma from Burlington High School in Burlington, IA. His long Naval career began with his enlistment in 1963 starting with two tours in Vietnam and on various ships. He then received his Bachelor's Degree in Physics from Creighton University in Omaha and his Masters in Radiation Physics from the University of Cincinnati. Other duties included Administrative Officer at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda and on the USS Holland stationed in Holy Loch, Scotland. Throughout the 1980's he served as Officer in Charge at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA. While stationed in Washington he received his MBA from City University in Bellevue, WA. His next assignments included Administration Officer for the Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, MD and the Director of Administration for the Naval Medical Center at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. For the next several years his assignments included Director of Administration for the Newport Naval Hospital, Directing Officer of the Indoctrination School in Newport and the Department Service Officer for the VFW for the State of RI. During his 30 year Naval Career he received numerous decorations including the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation with Bronze Star, Navy E Ribbons, Good Conduct Medal and National Defense.After retiring, his professional memberships included the American Academy of Medical Administrators and the American College of Managed Care Administrators. He was also a member of the All Vets Club, the VFW Post 4487, the AMVETS Post 60, the Retired Officers Association, the Fleet Reserve Association, the DAV and the BPOE Elks Lodge 104.Besides his wife of 18 years, he is survived by his brother Charles K. Travis of Seattle, WA, his step son Patrick Shelton of Lebanon, OH and step daughter Robin M. Bates of St. Roberts, MO.He was the father of the late Matthew D. Travis and brother of the late Michael F.
