"Gayle B Testa lit a candle in memory of Mrs. Mary L. Farias"
Mary Lourdes (Andrade) Farias, 77, passed away surrounded by love and in the warmth of family and friends at Newport Hospital on Saturday, September 23, 2017. She was the beloved wife of Donald T. Farias of Middletown, celebrating their 57th wedding anniversary this year. She is survived by her sons, Donald T. Farias, II, of Middletown and Michael G. Farias of Huntsville, Alabama, as well as her grandsons, Samuel Farias, Oscar Farias, Edgar Farias, and August Farias of Newport and Middletown; their mother, Samantha Hines, of Newport; her granddaughters, Mary Helen Farias and Rose Michelle Farias, and their mother, Marie (Boothby) Farias, of Huntsville, Alabama, her nephews Stephen and John Pecoraro, as well as a wide circle of much-adored friends and family. Her granddaughter Audrey Marie Farias, brother Antone Andrade, Jr., sister Rosealie (Andrade) Pecoraro, and her parents Antone Andrade and Mary (Lopes) Andrade of the island of Faial, Azores, Portugal, predeceased her. She was born on November 5, 1939, in Newport, RI, grew up in Middletown, and was a 1957 graduate of Rogers High School. After raising her family, she returned to school and graduated with great pride from Bristol Community College with an Associate's Degree in Library Science. A lifelong leaner, she was a participant in the Circle of Scholars program offered by Salve Regina University and was a member of a book club that inspired and invited thought-provoking discussions. She worked in the Newport Hospital library for 42 years, knowledgably and selflessly serving patients, their families, and health-care professionals. She was a parishioner at Jesus Savior Church and for the last forty-plus years a parishioner and Eucharistic Minister at St. Lucy's Church. She was a volunteer at Child and Family Services, assisted with voter registration and polling in Middletown, served as a teacher for the Youth Ministry program at St. Lucy's, and was a friend to animals at the Potter League. An intrepid and tireless traveler, she visited Germany, Italy, Greece, Portugal, France, England, Austria, and Switzerland. She loved to read, paint, and do needlepoint. And though she would not necessarily count cooking as a hobby, her lasagna, chili, molasses cookies, lemon meringue, apple, and pineapple apricot pies were nothing short of unparalleled. "Peaceful White Lilies Basket was purchased for the family of Mrs. Mary L. Farias."
"To the family of Mary, Oh how wonderful you were to me regarding ALL the help you gave in the medical library on research papers that I needed to earn my BS Degree. She would spend hours with me, and call me as soon as she found something that would apply to my courses. I would see Mary at CVS in Middletown, buy this and that, and we would spot each other, and a hug came next. Mary was a very thoughtful, and kind lady. I am so sorry you are not here with us, but WE all remember the gift of your great smile, and unrelenting kindness. So, so sorry. Carol Ann"
"I KNEW MARY FROM NPH --IF YOU HAD A QUESTION ABOUT ANYTHING YOU JUST CALLED MARY IN THE LIBRARY SHE EITHER KNEW THE ANSWER OR WOULD FIND IT FOR YOU---ALWAYS SO PLEASANT --AFTER WE RETIRED I MET UP WITH MARY IN STORES OR AT THE BEACH CONCERTS ON TUES NIGHTS ---OR IN ST LUCY,S CHURCH WHERE SHE WAS A EUCHARISTIC MINISTER ----SHE ALWAYS LOOKED STUNNING --- SHE WILL BE MISSED--R.I.P. MARY"
"To Don, Don, Jr. and his wonderful wife, Samantha, gkids here on the Island, and other family we have not met, our deepest sympathies to you in the loss of Mary. I knew her more "back in the day" when we were both in medical library work, but was always happy to run into her at concerts, grocery stores, etc., etc. May your memories support you now and forever.Don and Sylvia Hampton"
"Mary, I will miss our long talks, you were my friend, advisor, and such a great listener. I will always remember the great times we had "hitting the Streets" whenever I visited you. Such good memories we shared. You will always be in my heart. Love you, Rita"
"I have known Mary for many years as we served as Eucharistic Ministers at the Saturday evening Mass at St. Lucy's Church. She was a beautiful person who always had a smile even during her struggles with cancer. Whenever I asked how she was doing, she would always answer "Okay" and then ask about my husband in a nursing home. I feel a sadness that she will no longer be standing next to me at the altar. My sincere sympathy to her husband, family, and her special friends."
"Wishing her family peace in knowing Mary was a great friend and co-worker. We grew up on the same street, but I never met her until I started working at NPH. We shared many long talks. She was a wonderful friend. I will miss meeting up with her at S&S. Sending prayers to heaven for her. (I'm SURE she is there)"
"Dear Donald and Family, I am so sorry for your loss, a big loss. Mary's attributes were many; she was smart, funny, beautiful, honest and a good loyal friend. Mary will be missed very much; is already. With sincere condolences, Vicki Williams and family."
