His fondest memory of his scholastic years was playing in the Tech Tourney at the old Boston Garden. Following high school, he enlisted in the army and was stationed at Ft. Myer. He had a lengthy career in the banking industry beginning with Beneficial Finance, then at Newport National Bank. The balance of his career was spent at Citizens Bank as a Vice President. He later volunteered at the Tennis Hall of Fame, greeting visitors. He was a proud denizen of the "City by the Sea" and took immense pleasure in guiding visitors about town. "Gene was a very lucky man indeed and was married to my cousin Arlene. While stationed in the Navy in Newport I would watch their children so they could have a night out by themselves. I was always welcome in their home and enjoyed many many good times there. Gene and Arlene had a very loving relationship and they are together once again. "41 Powell Ave. was an important place for me in the late 1980's. In many ways I grew up there. It's where so many of my evenings would start out and often times would end. Most of those nights a few of us would show up extra early to meet up with Patrick. It didn't matter if Patrick was ready or not (he never was) and quite frankly we would have gone over even if Patrick wasn't there... we wanted to be there. We loved hanging out with Gene and Arlene... Mr. and Mrs. Deady. After a visit in the kitchen with Mrs. Deady, we'd make our way down to the study to sit with Gene. It was like walking into Dave Gavitt's office. We'd watch whatever game was on and listen to him coach. He'd be commenting on the game and the players but you couldn't help but think he was referring to you. I'd think to myself, "Maybe I should be more aggressive", "Maybe I don't have enough discipline." No matter what though, he was funny, he was direct and always talked to us like men. It was very cool. Patrick would eventually come down and as we'd head out, Mr. Deady would throw out one last barb to remind us, "not to be asses." Great coaching to the end.RIP Mr. DeadyLove Jay"
