MUSCATINE, Iowa - Mary Lou Thompson, 82, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2020, in Dubuque, Iowa.

There will be a private Graveside Service. Burial will take place in Letts Cemetery. The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements. Mary Lou was born on December 23, 1937, in Letts, the daughter of Arthur Ellsworth and Mary Susan McCoy Thompson.

She graduated from Letts High School and from Iowa Wesleyan with her two year teaching certificate. Later she received her bachelor's degree in teaching and her art teachers certificate from Iowa State Teachers College. She was an art teacher in the Marshalltown School System for 36 years. Mary Lou was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa and PEO.

Mary Lou enjoyed teaching art to Junior High students and traveling with her friends.

Those left to honor her memory include her sister, Margaret Ann Carter of Letts; nine nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; and numerous great great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, James Thompson.

"Margaret Ann Carter, All nieces and nephews, Mary Lou was a dear friend though Anson Middle School as a para-educator,P.E.O., and Hope United Methodist Church. We had inspiring conversations at church or when ever we met. Her art students were her legacy for the future. My thoughts and sympathy are with you all. Your care for her in these later years was very generous. A memorial as been sent to Hope United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. Joann Neven"
