Maggie was born February 13, 1956, in Mason City, Iowa, to Julian Piceno Mujica and Sylvestra Ruiz Mujica. She grew up in Manly, Iowa, then moved with her family to Mason City at the age of eight. Maggie attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City Senior High School.

During college, Maggie met the love of her life, Dave, and was married on August 6, 1977, in Hampton, Iowa. They lived in various locations in Iowa before making Ankeny their home. Maggie and Dave have two children, Sarah and Michael.

Maggie graduated from North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), with an Associates of Arts Degree, majoring in General Education and Music Education; William Penn University, with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in General Education with an emphasis in Vocal Music and a minor in Spanish Education; and Morningside College, with a Masters of Professional Education.

Maggie was a lifelong learner and additionally earned college credits from Wartburg College, University of Northern Iowa, UNINTER (Universidad Internacional in Cuernavaca, México), Iowa State University, and the University of Iowa.

Maggie devoted her professional career to Des Moines Public Schools as an Educator. Throughout her career, she taught many students, Pre-K and K-12, in various subject areas, including English as a Second Language/English Language Learners, Spanish, Music, and others.

Maggie's interests included teaching fitness classes as a licensed Zumba Fitness Instructor and licensed Zumba Gold Instructor. She enjoyed singing, especially with the Prairie Ridge Church worship and production team. She could also be found singing karaoke at any available opportunity. Teaching, music, singing, dancing, cooking, and spending time with her family were among Maggie's passions. Her faith was incredibly important to her and she was honored to share His Word with others. Maggie's faith was very impactful both to her and the many friends and family who provided support throughout her cancer journey. She was grateful for their many acts of kindness and felt loved by every gesture, large or small.

Maggie and Dave enjoyed traveling over the years in the United States, México and Canada with their children. Maggie loved traveling to Estes Park, Colorado, with Dave and their children. She often said Estes Park was their 'home away from home.' Other favorite places included México; Beaufort, South Carolina; Florida beaches; many National Parks; and Smoky Mountains, Arkansas, and other trips with their Miata friends.

Maggie was preceded in death by her parents, Julian Piceno Mujica and Sylvestra Ruiz Mujica, and her brother-in-law, Daniel Voy. Survivors include her husband, Dave; her children and children-in-love, Sarah (Sherman) Wilson and Michael (Suzie) Voy; her grand-dogs Sophie and Winston; three brothers Valentine, David, and Daniel Mujica; numerous cousins; and many loving friends.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Can Do Cancer (https://candocancer.org/how-to-help/patient-donation.html) or The Pink Tractor Foundation (https://www.facebook.com/PinkTractorFoundation). These two local non-profit organizations provide support to cancer patients and their families during treatment and other difficult times. Maggie and her family are extremely grateful for the support these organizations have provided and know that future donations will make a positive impact for other families in a time of need.

Maggie and her family would like to thank the many friends and caregivers who provided support along her cancer journey. Many heartfelt thanks to Prairie Ridge Church and small group members, MercyOne Cancer Center, MercyOne Hospice Care, A Plus Home Care Services, and all others who reached out with offers of support.

"I met Maggie at Fitness World when she would attend my Zumba classes before she became a licensed instructor herself. Maggie was always a ray of sunshine in class, smiling and dancing with her own special flair. I loved seeing her in class as she obviously loved Zumba and being around the others in class. She always shared an encouraging word, a fun story, or just an overwhelming sense of joy to everyone she was in contact with. I never knew her to be down or sad. I never saw her discouraged. And as she faced cancer again she was an incredible force of positivity and hope and faith. She is an incredible role model. I am proud to call Maggie my friend and I am forever blessed to have had her in my life. She is deeply missed. I wish her family and friends peace in the days ahead. "

"I remember meeting Maggie at Fitness World, she would not miss a Zumba class ever. No matter how good or bad of a class I think I gave, she was always there to cheer me up, encourage and support. She always brought so much life and enthusiasm to everywhere she went. She had a light and glow of her own. We danced, practiced and talk about anything. Whenever I needed her, she was there. I thank life for giving me the gift of knowing her! "

"I met Maggie several years ago when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer. I was her patient partner for Can Do Cancer and continued to remain friends with her through the years and after her recurrence. She was an inspiration to all of us. I was there to offer her my support, but it was Maggie who taught me so much. She loved everyone and everything with all her heart, especially her family. Even when she wasn't feeling her best she tried to find the positive and took the time to update all who were thinking and praying for her. Maggie was the definition of her own words, "take and give love." I will miss her smile and hugs. "

"Maggie and I met at Fitness World and became close friends. We bonded together over Zumba and had many deep discussions when we got together at Main Street Cafe and the Ankeny Movie Theater. I remember the first time I met her-she was auditioning to become a Zumba instructor! She rocked it in her beautiful exercise skirt and shirt! From then on, our friendship just clicked. Maggie will always have a place in my heart. I believe she is still with me now in spirit. I even felt her spirit the other day communicating with me-Maggie, I look forward to dancing again with you in Heaven. I will miss you dearly until that time comes. "
