Robert Ross McKay
May 24, 1947 - June 4, 2020

Robert "Bob" R. McKay, age 73, passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI.

Bob was born on May 24, 1947 in New Rochelle, NY to William and Elida (Werenskjold) McKay. He attended The New York College of Music and was a member of the Kappa Omega chapter of Phi Mu Alpha.

An avid Drum and Bugle Corps member in his youth, Bob was very involved in the Michigan Competitive Marching Band circuit. Bob worked with bands at Ferndale High School, Howell High School, Redford High School and Lakeview Saint Clair Shores High School from 1988-2001 as a music and marching instructor.

Bob was a local music teacher, teaching band at St. Joan of Arc in Saint Clair Shores and several private students. He retired from Grosse Pointe North High School in June of 2017 after 19 years of sharing his musical knowledge. Bob was a local musician performing with his wife, Cheryl, at several Metro Detroit churches and events. Over the years he had been involved with several musical groups including the Oakland County Community Band and The Hotel Savarine Society Orchestra in the 80's, The Motor City Brass Band, The Judelaires and many local community theaters.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl Faba, his children with Jane Bischoff McKay, Marney (Jerimiah Meyer) and Logan, his step-daughters Emily and Julia Chateau and hundreds of students that he loved dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Elida (Werenskjold) and sister, Carol.

A musical celebration of life was held on July 24, 2020 with family, students and close friends.
