Raymond "R.L." Lionel Spurgeon Jr.
May 19, 1951 - August 4, 2020

R.L.'s family is requesting those in attendance to please wear a mask to both the visitation and funeral.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 10, 2020, at the Hampton United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 9, 2020, at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. Burial will take place in the Hampton Cemetery.

Raymond "R.L." Lionel Spurgeon Jr., 69, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2020, at his home in Hampton. He was born May 19, 1951, in Carthage, Missouri, to Raymond Lionel Spurgeon Sr. and Dorothy Ann Feather.

R.L. attended Carthage High School. He was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Ellen Woltjer on August 5, 1970, in Carthage, Missouri. R.L. retired from Burns and McDonnell and also worked for Seabees for 25 years. He was a reserve Hampton police officer and a volunteer firefighter for the Hampton Fire Department.

R.L. never met a stranger; he could talk to anyone and was kind to everyone. He told the best jokes and was the biggest Kansas City Chiefs fan. R.L. loved singing with his brother, David; he filled the room with love when he sang. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and playing cards with family and friends. R.L. loved spending time with his family and traveling with the love of his life, his wife, Gwen.

R.L. is survived by his wife Gwen Spurgeon of Hampton; daughters Deana (Marcos) Hernandez of Eagle Pass, Texas, Jennifer Spurgeon of Hampton and Sarah (Clay) Miller of Hampton; sister Charlotte Buerge of Carthage, Missouri; brother David (Phyllis) Spurgeon of Hampton; grandchildren Elliott Spurgeon of Ames, Ethan Spurgeon of Iowa Falls, Jennerae Spurgeon of Hampton, Jessilyn Spurgeon of Hampton, Jace Spurgeon of Hampton, Ariana Hernandez of Eagle Pass, Texas, Conner Miller of Hampton and Savery Miller of Hampton; great grandsons Beckham Spurgeon of Cedar Rapids and Atikus Raymond Lionel George of Hampton; along with many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, father- and mother-in-law, grandson Jace Spurgeon and nephew Steven Buerge.

"I worked with R.L. for many years at the Seabee Foundry. What a great guy! He always had a smile on his face and never seemed to have a bad day. ALWAYS enjoyed listening to him sing "House of the Rising Sun" at the Seabee Christmas parties. What a great voice he had! He touched the lives of many people and will be FOREVER missed!"
