Jeryl W. Schmitt, 67, of Hampton, passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2020, at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, after a battle with Melanoma cancer that lasted less than a year. He was born October 11, 1952, in Hampton, to Wendell and Dorothy (Rodemeyer) Schmitt.

Jeryl graduated from Hampton High School. He furthered his education at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls and earned his Bachelor's degree from Iowa State University. Jeryl was united in marriage to Jane Kay Smith on April 20, 1985, in Ankeny. He was a machinist at Mid:Com Midwest Meter in Hampton, retiring after over 40 years. Jeryl was also a lifelong farmer and was a member of Pheasants Forever and Iowa State University Alumni Association. He was affiliated with First Christian Church in Hampton and was a member of the First Christian Church Men's Fellowship. Jeryl was an avid Cyclones fan and loved watching ISU sports. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and traveling with his wife, Jane. He liked playing cards and Cribbage, and enjoyed attending his son's music performances through the years. Time spent with friends, his family, and grandchildren was precious to Jeryl.

Jeryl is survived by his wife Jane Schmitt of Hampton; son Jeff (Lori) Schmitt of Iowa Falls; grandchildren Tara, Luke and Emma Schmitt of Iowa Falls; father Wendell Schmitt of Hampton; brother David (Connie) Schmitt of Ankeny; sister Mary Lynne Schmitt of Fairmont, Minnesota; along with several other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Schmitt.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family or the Melanoma Research Foundation.

"Jane and Family, I was playing cards tonight and remembered my dear friend from Iowa State that taught me the "ins and outs" of Hearts, Jerry Schmitt. I decided to look him up on line and was so saddened by the news of his passing. He was a gentle giant and it looks like he had a wonderful wife and a wonderful life. My deepest condolences. Jenni Severin "

"One of our (Joe and Sue) most glorious moment was when Joe and I introduced Jerry and Jane on our wedding day. That introduction grew into a beautiful life together. "

"I'm truly sorry and thinking of all of you guys. There are so many memories I have about Jeryl, but 1 stands out in my mind. Jeff and I were maybe 10 years old or so and we all went riding around in his truck. It was just something to do. On our way back to the house, I noticed it became really silent in the car. Jeryl obviously noticed and out of nowhere yelled "JESUS CHRIST!!!" This sent my entire body out of the seat and he just laughed and laughed. To this day, it is the worst someone has ever scared me :). "

"Jane, Jeff, and family - we are so very sorry for your loss and are all thinking of you. I'll be forever grateful for the time I spent growing up with you all as "Family Friends" - more like family than friends. I'll never forget Jeryl as the captain of the pontoon boat, the master griller at our 4th of July get-togethers (trying to get the London Broil recipe from my mom), many games of cribbage, and "blocking the end" during pheasant hunts at the Crock farm. His patient and quiet demeanor was something that we could all learn from. I can only imagine him in heaven's machine shop tinkering with his latest creation. The world is diminished by his loss but some of us are fortunate enough to have his memory live on. Love you all- Ben, Amanda, Charlotte, & Grandt Wobschall"

"Dearest Jane, There are no words to share that express the sadness felt at the reading of Jeryl's move to Heaven. A much brighter place that will be. Lean on Our Lord He is always there waiting for us to call. May God's grace and peace sustain you through the weeks ahead. Blessings Donna Dunlap"

"Jane and family, The only conclusion I've been able to come up with is, God certainly needed a good-hearted, kind, loving man to help him with all the damage the Devil is doing. May God wrap ? his loving arms around each of you, hold you tight and give you the strength needed to get through the grieving journey, no matter how long that may take. Jane, you are such a beautiful, loving, kind, caring woman. May the love and kindness of family and friends help you through, also. Peace and Comfort be with you. Deb ( Dunlap) Lindley "

"Jane, Jeff, and family, I was so shocked to learn of Jeryl's passing. Although we have lost touch over the years, I still remember times visiting at the ball diamond watching the boys play. And of course, growing up in the same neighborhood, he and his siblings rode the same bus as I did "back in the day". He was a great guy and will be sorely missed. Sending prayers for comfort and peace. Kathy (Hill) Hotchkiss"

"Today, we learned we lost one of our very own. The Midwest Meter and MID:COM family is heart-sick to say good-bye to our very own #1! He was the very first employee hired in 1977 when Maurice Vosburg decided to start manufacturing the first MID:COM computer register. We will forever remember your CAN-DO attitude, your slow and easy way of telling some of the best stories, and your great love of all things IOWA STATE! To Jane, we say......we love you, girl....to Jeff, we say....there was no better man to teach you how to grow up to be a good man....and to all Jeryl's friends....we stand shoulder to shoulder in our wishes of "Good-bye, kind friend...you will be missed and always remembered!"
