Joseph Nathaniel Williams
October 26, 1930 - October 5, 2020
Joseph Nathaniel Williams, was born to the union of Rev. Martin Luther Williams, and Joretha Glover, the seventh child of ten siblings in Savannah, Georgia. He accepted Christ at an early age. He graduated from Beach High School and attended one year at Savannah State College before entering the Army. He was in Airborne 101 Division for the Korean War. He was discharged in May 1953, and relocated to Detroit, Michigan where he met and married Sammie Lee Moore.
To this union six children were born, Eyvette, Janet, Roderick, Annette, Eric, and Joseph Jr. 15 grandchildren: Tyra, Gregory, Joseph A., Jenell, Rashod, Kendra, Samuel, Samoane, Terrence, Erick, Jenaye, Cedric, Camille, Dawnyelle, and Joseph G., and 20 great-grandchildren.
Joseph was a bus driver for the D.O.T before entering his career as a third-generation chef for Crowley Stores. His final job was as a cook and chauffeur for the Pierson family of Grosse Pointe.
Joseph was a Deacon in the church for more than 40 years serving under the following Pastors: Allen Jones, Stanley Pickett, and Robert Perkins. He continued his service to the church, from his motorized wheelchair under Pastor Billie Smith, where he taught Sunday School, and Wednesday Bible Study. He was very charismatic, and an eloquent teacher and orator. He most importantly loved to cook especially for his family.
Joseph entered the VA Hospital on September 16, 2020, and after several days he was informed that his prostate cancer had worsened and spread over his body. He was released into hospice care at home on October 2, 2020, unable to talk. On Saturday, October 3, realizing he was at home, he was able to say "Hi," "Thank You," "Love You," and of course "Let's Pray."
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, uncles, Fred and Clarence; four brothers: Luther, Moses, Lawrence, and Ephraim; three sisters: Rhamy, Anna Mae, Eunice, his darling wife Sammie, brothers-in-law: Thomas Newton Sr., Rufus Williams, Jacob Johnson, Willie Moore, and James Wells.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his brother Rev. and Mrs. Adam (Filomena) Williams of Seattle, WA, his sister Rev. Joretha Johnson of Hephzibah, GA, sister-in-laws: Annie Wells, and Diane Williams. six children: Eyvette Foster of Muskegon, MI, Janet Williams of Detroit, MI, Rev. Roderick (Angela) Williams of Chicago, IL, Annette William of Detroit, MI, Eric (LaDon) Williams of Detroit,MI, and Joseph (Guinevere) Williams of Enid, OK, 15 grandchildren, a goddaughter Ursula Scott, a special nephew Thomas Newton, and favorite nice Tiny and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
