In loving memory of

Richard Allan Medley
September 15, 1958 - October 10, 2020

Richard Allan Medley, 62, of Portsmouth, RI, passed away suddenly on October 9, 2020. Richard was born in Coshocton, OH to Richard Medley and Mabel Lorine Medley. Richard was the husband of Caroline Medley of Portsmouth, RI.

Richard attended the United States Naval Academy, class of 1980, as well as MIT for his Engineer's Degree - EE. He went on to serve in the United States Navy. He was the Commanding Officer of the USS Providence 719, and when he retired from the Navy, worked at the Naval Underwater Warfare Center for the last 16 years.

While he was a playful jokester and prankster from a young age, those who knew Richard best remember him as a giving person (especially remembering your favorite food) and a passionate storyteller. He loved movies and would often share his thoughts with a movie quote or trivia. He also loved computers and would play Lords of the Realm II forever if allowed.

Besides his wife Caroline Medley and mother Mabel Lorine Medley, he is survived by his daughter Cheryl Medley and her wife Jae Vick of Vermont, and his daughter Sarah Medley of New Hampshire, his brother Randy Medley and his sister Lori Pethel of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his father Richard Medley.

A Memorial Service will be held in the Spring, the date is to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Navy Dolphin Scholarship Foundation (dolphinscholarship.org/giving/donations/honor-memorial-giving/)

"Mr. Medley was a kind and dependable fixture of my youth and I am so grateful for his giving example and for the great daughters he raised that I am blessed to know. I am still touched by how he found jobs for me to do so that he could find a way to help contribute to my college education. He was an giver of good gifts - a quality which I continue to admire and hope to emulate. We miss you!"

"My deepest sorrow, for the loss of a wonderful human being, who gave his all to make our lives enriched. I have so many good memories of Richard growing up, and all the times he came to my house to play RISK of course I never won a game. But we played many days and nights. The times he would come over for me to cut his hair. Guess I did a good job, he would come back for many more. As I sit here at my computer, with tears streaming down my face, I am still in shock. Rich made a impact on all our lives, he was a giver and he never forgot any of us back home. I want to say to Carolyn and his daughters, that I am so, so sorry, and I pray that each day you find comfort in looking and remembering all the wonderful, fun times you shared as a family. Richard loved his wife dearly, and he found so much joy in his daughters. I know his in-laws love him, and valued his time here in earth. In closing, I just want to say, that I just pray that Richards passing will be a not in vain, but with a purpose. "

"My heartfelt condolences go out to Caroline and the whole family. Since I heard of his passing, I have had many great memories come back to me. For me, as for many people, Richard was a colorful character and we shared many memorable experiences together in our youth in Coshocton, at the Naval Academy, and after graduation in Boston and Connecticut. I can remember many times when one of Richard\'s pranks left me doubled over with laughter and I can still hear Richard\'s laugh when I think about it. Prayers for Richard and family."
