Geraldine "Gerri" Garton
May 23, 1938 - November 4, 2020

Geraldine "Gerri" Garton, 82, of Newton, passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2020. A private family funeral will be held at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Baxter, Iowa on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. Friends may watch her service livestream at https://www.facebook.com/Fredregill-Family-Funeral-Homes-Baxter-Zearing-149323271778320. Burial will follow in Restland Cemetery in Baxter, Iowa.
Gerri was born on May 23, 1938 to Merle and Doris (Logsdon) Borts in Colfax, Iowa. She graduated from Mingo Consolidated School with the class of 1956. Gerri married Doug Garton on February 10, 1962 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple moved to Baxter where they began their family. Gerri worked as a business administrator in the insurance industry and the public schools. She was a member of the United Congregational Church of Christ in Baxter for over 50 years. Gerri also served the church as the treasurer for many years. She helped with the local 4-H as well. Gerri loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed bowling and being in bowling league for many years, gardening, flowers, cooking, being an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan, and socializing with her friends. Gerri was a very loving and carrying person that loved to help others. She will be missed dearly by all family and friends.
Those left to cherish her loving memories are her children, Deb (Doug) Freese, Chris (Andrea) Garton, and Troy (Lynne) Garton; grandchildren, Michael (Amanda) Freese, Jill (Scott) Dykstra, Seth (Megan) Garton, Chelsea (Dustin) Fox, Stefan Garton, Tyler Garton, Tanner Garton, and Treycen Garton; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Brianna, and Katelyn Freese, Autumn, Savannah, Brooklyn, Ember Dykstra, and Cora Garton; sisters-in-law Karen (Dean) Flora, and Norma Jean Richeson; many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
Gerri was preceded in death by her parents, husband Doug, grandson Lincoln Garton, brother-in-law Stan Richeson.

"My memories of Gerri include sleeping with her when I was 6 while I stayed with my Aunt and Uncle when my parents went on vacation. I also remember her playing the piano and accordian and our singing along with her. She was always athletic and played basketball in high school. --Connie Ruggless"
