Marty Hosbond, 74 years of age, of rural Colfax, Iowa entered his eternal rest on November 12, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at 1:00 pm at the First Reformed Church in Prairie City. Burial will follow at Waveland Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Coburn Funeral Home in Prairie City. Marty was born on March 28, 1946 in Rhode Island, which always held a special place in his heart, with many memories of his early growing up years. Marty also enjoyed many wonderful times on the dairy farm in Nova Scotia owned by his aunt and uncle. Here he learned to milk cows by hand, and to honor the values that come from caring for living creatures. The love of the rural lifestyle and people eventually led to his move to Iowa, where his father was born and reared, and where his grandmother was still living. Marty received an AS in Business Management from Bryant University in Smithfield RI, a BS in Business Management from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and later an MBA, also from Drake University in Des Moines. He received his IT education through IBM and he worked within this field for his varied career. Marty was able to contribute to Information Technology for Insurance Companies, Hospitals, Banks, Credit Unions, State Government, Subscription fulfillment, and he served as a IT Consultant. Marty influenced many lives and shared his wide knowledge of IT through his 34 years of teaching as an adjunct professor for Des Moines Area Community College at the Ankeny, Des Moines, West Des Moines, and Newton Campuses. He also served as an adjunct professor for Central College in Pella, Iowa. Marty had a dream of breeding horses, and when he moved to Iowa he was able to fulfill this dream. Along his journey, in addition to gathering a vast amount of knowledge about horses and horse breeding, he was honored to care for many wonderful horses, make numerous friends and enjoy learning from mentors. Marty was instrumental in forming, leading, playing and singing in a band that performed at many venues, especially private parties and corporate venues. The band in which he played was called "Square One." The band included a Lead Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Bass Guitar and Drums. They enjoyed entertaining, singing and playing Classic Rock, Blues, Oldies and some Country. Marty was an avid Beatles fan and attended many of their concerts. He was a very talented man, gifted entertainer, well-known for his humor, and always enjoyed sharing his many stories. Of his talents, giftings, and varied interests, teaching was the most fulfilling of his public ventures. Marty loved his family. He will be missed by his family and many friends.
Martin is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife Rebecca of Prairie City; and 10 children Jeff(Karie) Hosbond of Colfax, Keven(Alicia) Hosbond of Grinnell, Kristen(Christopher) Donahue of Pleasant Hill, Martin Hosbond of Prairie City, Robert(April) Bent of Newton, Heather Matson of Des Moines, April(Josh) Scott of Pleasant Hill, Rachel Matson of Prairie City, Brooke Matson of Des Moines, and Aaron Matson of Prairie City; 11 grandchildren Ashlen, Kasey, Oliver, Simon, Noah, Gavin, Elizabeth, Ryan, Ethan, Chloe and Cassie; and brother Carl(Kathy) Hosbond; and sister Netha(Ron) Brada; and many, many friends. Martin was predeceased by his parents; Harold Hosbond and Mollie(Malcom) Decker.
The family would like to say a special thanks to Care Initiatives Hospice for the excellent care they provided to help Rebecca care for Martin in his home during his final days. The family also would also like to say a special thanks to Edencrest @ Green Meadows for the excellent care they provided to Marty this spring before he transitioned back home.

"I have been blessed to have 2 best friends in my life and I consider Marty to be one of them. I have known him for 34 years. He was my manager/friend at the Iowa Credit Union League and Mercy Hospital. He was instrumental in me teaching at DMAC for a few years and allowed me to be one of the original members of his band. Like best friends, years passed by only briefly making contact to check in with each other but best friends we remained. "I worked with Marty during his time at the State as ICAR Bureau Chief. His office was right next to mine. I endearingly called him "Rhode Island Red" for the obvious reasons. Marty had a wonderful, if somewhat offbeat, sense of humor. I would often find myself the foil for his latest comedic stylings ("I was born in a hospital to be closer to my mother") and would always laugh (or groan). Many times we would find ourselves in conversations about a myriad of topics; usually having to do with his many "loves" - music, farming, horses, livestock, even IT work. But most important of all was his love of family, as he mentioned them often, and never failed to show me pictures on his phone or tell the latest stories, like his tribulations in building young Martin the perfect swing set. Marty was a giant of a man in many ways. He will be dearly missed. "
