In loving memory of

Jean Lois Schmidt
May 29, 1927 - November 27, 2020

Schmidt, Mrs.
Jean Lois
Whitehall, Michigan (formerly of Muskegon)

Jean Lois Schmidt, age 93, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2020. She was born in Holland, MI on May 29, 1927 to Peter & Jean (Nyburg) Williams. Jean married Arthur Schmidt on February 12, 1949. Jean met Art when they both worked for General Telephone Company.

The family would like to give thanks to the countless nurses and caregivers at Harbor Hospice, SKLD/Whitehall and Dayspring Assisted Living who were our angels on Earth over the many years. Since a funeral is not feasible at this time, the family asks that you add a memory to the guestbook as it would warm our hearts to hear how Jean has touched your lives.

Jean never met a stranger in her life and was loved by all. Her warm personality was truly one of a kind. She will be remembered as a generous and loving soul with an unwavering faith, a kind heart, a contagious smile, and never-ending hugs that we especially missed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She was often found tending to her beautiful yard and garden that boasted the most magnificent peonies, hydrangeas, day lilies, and her favorite flower - roses. Later in life, Jean & her grandkids most memorably enjoyed picking raspberries in the backyard at her house on Princess Lane and watching birds at her condo in North Muskegon.

Jean was very active in volunteering at Samuel Lutheran Church, and the non-profit organization, Love, Inc. She loved children and spent time as a Foster Grandmother with Muskegon Public Schools. Jean also held the title of "Greater Muskegon Mother of the Year" in 1989. All volunteering efforts were fueled by her constant love for being near her family and her desire to help those in need.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband Arthur Schmidt, brothers, Raymond Williams, Norris Williams, and sisters, Marian Ridgeway, Margaret DeGlopper and Grace Kolling.

She is survived by her sons and daughters: Joy Campbell (Doug) of Hesperia, Steve Schmidt (Susan) of Kalamazoo, Peggy Rop (Stan) of North Muskegon, Mike Schmidt (Josefina) of El Paso, TX, Suzanne Spence (Mark) of Cypress, TX; by her 10 cherished grandchildren: Julie Pederson (Tim) MI, Matt Campbell (Jenn) MI, Ryan Campbell (Maja) FL, Jeff Rop (Mary) MN, Kevin Rop MI, Mandi Woods (Jackson) WA, Michael Schmidt TX, Michelle Schmidt TX, Rebecca Spence CO, and Sarah Spence TX; and by her 9 loving great-grandchildren: Colin, Jacob, Aiden, Zander, Ellie Jean, Elliott, Jordan, Justin and Madison. Jean is also survived by her brother, Glenn Williams (Sue) NC, Niece Karin Howell (Dave) of Spring Lake, and other special nieces and nephews.

"My deepest sympathy to Jean's children, my cousins. One could go on and on about her attributes, but suffice it to say that Jean was truly an example of a Christian woman who was loved by all she encountered during her lifetime. She left this world a better place. June Schmidt Shaw"

"My deepest sympathies to the Schmidt family for the loss of their beloved mom! I will forever remember Mrs. Schmidt with a smile on her face. When visiting the Schmidt home, she was always making something yummy and always very welcoming. Later I had the privilege of watching her work with young children when she was a Foster Grandparent. Mrs. Schmidt carried that smile with her the whole time she was working with children. The children knew how much she cared and she made a big difference in their little worlds. May all the many wonderful memories bring you comfort in time. "

Julie AmRhein wrote on Nov 30, 2020:

"I have fond memories of Mrs. Schmidt's kindness. I've been a friend of her daughter Suzanne since our highschool days. In college I developed allergies to cats, of which we had 4 in our household. So returning home during school breaks was a wheezing, sneezing experience until Mrs. Schmidt said "stay here!" Princess Lane became my home base during college. Her reaction to life was a smile and cheerful greeting; not common enough these days. My condolences to the Schmidt family. "

Georganna Rice wrote on Nov 29, 2020:

"Jean was a wonderful neighbor on Princess Road. She was so kind to our family. We moved there in the early eighties from the east side of the state with a two year old. It was comforting, knowing she was across the street and a friend I knew I could count on. She truly was a lovely Christian lady. Condolences to her family ~Dave and Georganna Rice"

"Jean Schmidt was my aunt. I remember her as a genuinely kind, warm, gentle ?Samaritan? to all who knew her. She served so many as living model of kindness, humility, generosity and charity and was among the nicest people I ever met. As a small child I can remember how impressed I was with her kindness and patience with her bratty little nieces and nephews the leader of which I often was! The world is a better place because of Jean Lois Schmidt Sincerity Craig Schmidt - Nephew"
