Richard Vander Horn DAVENPORT, Iowa - Richard Vander Horn, 78, of Davenport, Iowa passed away on, April 30, 2011, at Good Samaritan in Davenport after an extended illness. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The Weerts Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Izaak Walton League of America or the Good Samaritan Society. Richard's family wishes to thank the wonderful staff of Good Samaritan Society-Davenport for their compassionate, loving care during his stay. Richard was born May 28, 1932 in Muscatine, to Peter and Genevieve Vander Horn. He graduated from Muscatine High School. He married Eunice Nicewanner in 1952, and was married 32 years until her death in 1984. He married Delores Downs in 1985. Richard was employed with Oscar Mayer for 34 years until he retired in November 1984. In addition, he enjoyed assisting with Firestone Racing traveling the racing circuit. Richard was a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan. He loved the outdoors and loved camping with his wife and friends. Richard was also an avid sportsman enjoying fishing and hunting. He is a lifetime member of the Izaak Walton League of America and as a determined environmentalist raised to the ranks as Chairman of the Board in Arlington, Virginia. He also was the Executive Secretary for the Izaak Walton League of Iowa and worked in the Iowa State legislature as an environmental lobbyist working to preserve Iowa's natural resources as well as serving on the Upper Mississippi River Basin Association working to restore and preserve the wetlands/ecosystem. Those left to honor his memory include his wife Delores Vander Horn of Davenport; children, Vicki Vander Horn of Moline, Illinois, Sandra Bergert and husband, Ned, of Yorba Linda, California, Terri Perkins and husband Randy, of Davenport, Kathleen Downs of East Moline, Illinois, Laurie Goderis and husband, Dan, of Marion, and Jerry Downs of Rock Island, Illinois; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Darrell Vander Horn and wife, Donna, of Muscatine; a sister Diane Holliday and husband, Ben, of Muscatine; and a brother-in-law, Gene Nicewanner and wife, Diana, of Plainfield, Illinois. Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Eunice.
