George W Akers

George Akers WEST LIBERTY #45;- George William Akers, 82, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at his home following an extended illness. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in West Liberty. The Rev. Ed O'Melia will officiate. Burial will be at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in West Liberty. Pallbearers will be Brian Akers, Jim Akers, Matt Akers, John Akers, Jeff Akers, Chris Akers, Dawn Akers, Bonnie VanEllen, Stephanie Akers, Regina Leture, and Lenard Phillips Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today at the Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty. He was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Morris, the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Roe Akers. He married Loretta M. Lenz on Aug. 17, 1939, in Iowa City. He and his wife moved to West Liberty in 1947, but had lived in the area all of their life. He worked at Alcoa in Bettendorf retiring in 1980. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorretta, on Jan. 12, 1982. Survivors include six sons, Jim Akers and his wife, Joann, of Clarence, Ben Akers and his wife, Kathleen, of Eldridge, Joe Akers and his wife, Jill, of Wilton, John Akers and his wife, Carol, of Cary, N. C., Dave Akers and his wife, Peg, of Nichols, and Mike Akers of Independence, Mo.; a daughter, Elizabeth Burkett of Davenport; a brother, Pat and his wife, Vivian, of Iowa City; 19 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Loretta Akers; two sisters, Mary and Katherine; and eight brothers, Leo, Charley, Delbert, Les, Tom, Paul, Bob, and Joe.
