LaVern Salek MUSCATINE - LaVerne O. Salek, 75, of 114 Park Ave., died Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, at Unity Hospital. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mathias Catholic Church, 215 W. Eighth St. The Rev. Bernard Wier will officiate. Honorary bearers will be Clint Schmitt, Darrell Beckey, Max Churchill, Dick Wilson, and Bill Antram. Pallbearers will be Jim White, Bill Wilson, Abby Logel, Glen Stuart, Bill Shea, and Buddy Ash. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, with a Rosary prayer service to be held at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Salek was born on Dec. 12, 1923, in Muscatine, the son of Louis John and Clazena Kobes Salek. He married Doris Kile on Aug. 26,1945, in Muscatine. He was a veteran of the U.S. Airforce serving in the 4th bomb squadron 34th bomb group. During World War II, he flew out of England and participated in the air offensive campaign over Normandy, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He worked for Stein Furniture Store as a linoleum mechanic installing carpet and linoleum. He retired in 1992. He also was a shoe repairman at Wilson Shoe Store. Survivors include his wife, Doris Salek of Muscatine; three sons, LaVerne John Salek, Robert Louis Salek and his wife, Cindi and David Arthur Salek, all of Muscatine; three daughters, Judith Ann Hagens and her husband, Jerry, of Aledo, Ill., Rosemary Montandon and her husband, Dennis, of Muscatine, and Janice Marie Morgan and her husband, Jody, of Fort Myers, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his mother, Clazena Salek of Muscatine and one brother, Louis Salek of Muscatine. He was preceded in death by his father; two brothers, Chet and DeWayne Salek; and one sister, Gertrude Rudolph.
