Henry Cowles WAPELLO, Iowa #45;- Henry Eugene Cowles, 91, Wapello, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington. Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello. The Rev. Richard Shaw will officiate. Musical selections will be provided by organist Kathleen Hagele and vocalist Kent Anderson. Pallbearers are Keith Ball, Chris Ball, Michael Ball, Dan Harris, Doug Harris, Craig Cowles, David Cowles and Brandon Cowles. Honorary pallbearers are Barbara Anderson, Nancy McLaughlin, Carol Eno, Emily Cowles and Bethany Hinkle. Burial will be at the Wapello Cemetery, Wapello. Visitation is after noon Monday, with family present 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the Wapello Volunteer Fire Department, the Wapello Rescue Unit and the Wapello Community Ambulance Service. Mr. Cowles was born on May 3, 1911, in Wapello, the son of Nelson Eugene and Anna Seitz Cowles. He married Irene Martha Cowles on March 25, 1933, in Rock Island, Ill. She preceded him in death on Sept. 22, 1973. He farmed and as of February 2002 his farm was included as an Iowa Century Family Farm. In his later years, he enjoyed working and creating in his shop. He supported fire and rescue personnel. He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren and their families. His horses and dogs were very special to him and he enjoyed hunting. He was a member of the Izaak Walton League. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Ball and her husband, John, of Mediapolis and Doris Harris and her husband, Lee, of Morning Sun; three sons, Warren Cowles and his wife, Judy, of Northbrook, Ill., Nelson Cowles and his wife, Leah, of Morning Sun and Robert Cowles and his wife, Cathy, of Wapello; a sister, Bertha Adams of Acton, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special friend, Melvine Graham of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sisters, Nellie French and Edith Cowles; and two brothers, Joseph and an infant brother.
