Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 9, 2021, at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.

Susan Jane (Roush) Pitts, 94, of Hampton, Iowa passed away, January 27, 2021, at Franklin Country View Nursing Facility in Hampton, Iowa. She was born on March 15, 1926, to Virgil Thompson Roush and Mary Etta (Ross) Roush in rural Highland County, Ohio. Jane attended one-room school in Boston, Ohio through 8th grade. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1944.

Anyone who knew Jane knew that she was a proud Buckeye. She especially loved to talk about Buckeye Football. She graduated from The Ohio State University in 1948 with a degree in Elementary Education. She took a teaching job in her hometown. She met Thomas Ladd Pitts II while working a summer job at the Farm Bureau Office. They were married in her parents' home on September 23, 1951.

Tom was drafted into the Army in 1952. Over the next year, they were stationed in Red Bank, New Jersey, and El Paso, Texas. Jane loved to share stories of her time teaching in those communities.

In 1969 Jane and Tom moved to Hampton. They loved it so much that they decided to make it their forever home. Their daughter, Jennifer Jane, was born there in 1970. Jane worked as a substitute teacher as well as in their real estate business. She was very involved in her community through Iowa Co of TTT Society and The Questers. Jane also held several volunteer positions at The United Methodist Church, while always making time for her Tuesday Bridge Club.

The true loves of Jane's life were her grandsons, Thomas and Owen. She loved doing puzzles, reading with them, or helping with homework. She got a huge kick out of their dog, Buster, getting excited when Nanny came to visit. After retiring from real estate, Jane discovered the joy of a morning coffee group. Her Coffee Sisters were friends who became family. They added immense love and contentment to her later years.

Jane is survived by her daughter Jennifer and son-in-law Todd Hutchison of Grosse Pointe Park, MI, and grandsons Thomas of Lansing, MI, and Owen of Grosse Pointe Park, MI.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Tom, and sister, Ann Ross.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or Hampton United Methodist Church. Cards of condolences for Jennifer Hutchison may be mailed to Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home, PO Box 403, Hampton, Iowa 50441.

"Tom and Jane were some of the first people Rick and I met when we moved to Hampton. They were both very active in all aspects of the community and showed that love of community to us as we settled into life in Hampton. Jane had a remarkable ability to remember everyone's name and would always ask about you and what you were up to. Both Jane and Tom were gentle reminders of the importance of being kind and giving back to your community. Tom and Jane will be missed.....Hampton owes them both a debt of gratitude and remembrance of their kind spirit. Rest in God's Peace, dear Jane Rick and Julie Salvesen"
