Frances E. Evans

Frances Evans West Liberty, Iowa #45;- Frances E. Evans, 87, West Liberty, formerly of Eddyville, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at the Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty, after an extended illness. Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel, Eddyville. Visitation after 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, with family present from 5-8 p.m., at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Eddyville Rescue Unit. The Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty, is in charge of local arrangements. Mrs. Evans was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Pella, the daughter of Jesse and Catherine Van Rees Barber. She married John D. Evans May 19, 1940, in Eddyville, where they lived all their lives. He preceded her in death in 1991. She was a graduate of Eddyville Schools and taught rural schools for six years prior to her marriage. In 1953, she returned to teaching for a total of 34 years in the Eddyville School District retiring in 1980. She received a bachelor of arts degree from William Penn College and master of arts degree from the University of Iowa, she later did graduate work at Drake University. She was active in civic and church organizations. A member of the First Christian Church, American Association of University Women, Garden Club, Woman's Club, Wapello Co. Retired Teachers, served as co-leader of an Eddyville Girl Scout Troop and was a charger member of the past TTT Society. Survivors include a daughter, JoAnne Akers and her husband, Joe, of West Liberty; three grandchildren, Bret Akers and his wife, Sarah, and Brad Akers and his wife, Mindy, all of West Liberty, and Elizabeth Evans of Pensacola, Fla.; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Adrianna Mroherk of California. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Roger P., and six brothers and sisters.
