Glenn Massey ILLINOIS CITY, Ill., #45;- Glenn R. Massey, 83, of Illinois City, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004 at Unity Hospital. Services are 10:00 a.m., Monday, Jan. 5 at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Aaron Massey, Adam Massey, Brian Massey, Jonathan Massey, Joshua Massey, Marty Kistler, Steve Kleies and Eric Kiddoo. Burial will be at Illinois City Cemetery with full Military Rites by the combined units of the American Legion and the VFW. Following the interment, a time of food and fellowship will be held in Illinois City. Visitation is 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 4 at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Illinois City Fire Department. Mr. Massey was born Dec. 11, 1920 in Strawberry, Ark., the son of Cleo and Effie Roberts Massey. He married Louise Imogene Guthrie March 20, 1943 in Little Rock, Ark. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II from 1942 through 1946, and was stationed in England from 1944 through 1946. He received his bachelor of education from Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark., then went on to receive his master's degree from Northern Illinois in DeKalb. He was a high school teacher for five-years in Strawberry, Ark. until he moved his family to Illinois City in 1955. There he became a teacher and then principal of the Illinois City Elementary School from 1955 to 1975. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Strawberry, Ark. In retirement, his special joy was spending time with his grandchildren and going to their sporting events. He also enjoyed gardening. Survivors include his wife Imogene; four sons, Don Massey and wife Joanne of Springfield, Ohio, Mike Massey and wife Gerry of Illinois City, Jack Massey and wife Rhonda of Reynolds and William 'Dub' Massey and wife Cindy of Muscatine; one brother-in-law, Julius Runyan of Mountain Home, Ark.; 12 grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter, Glenda Louise; one grandson, Lincoln Massey; four brothers, Raymond, Bynum, Johnney and Noah Massey and two sisters, Kate Runyan and Inez Foushee.
