John David Gale Singleton
February 19, 1920 - April 2, 2004

John Singleton IOWA CITY, Iowa - John David Gale Singleton, 84, of Wapello, died Friday, April 2, 2004 at the University of Iowa Hosptals and Clinics in Iowa City. Services are 2 p.m. Monday, April 5 at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello with the Revs. Dan Doolin and Brent Smith officiating. Music will be provided by Bev Parsons, organist and Alana Poage, vocalist. Casket bearers are Shad Singleton, Seth Singleton, Jeff Underwood, Rod Carlson, Mike Maddux and DeWayne Connolly. Honorary casket bearers are Sam Walker, Dwight Walker, Larry Walker, Tom Walker and Rocky Williams. Flower attendants are Sara Maddux, Amanda Wood and Angela Singleton. Burial will be at the Mallory Cemetery in rural Wapello. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. Sunday, April 4 at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Wapello Rescue Unit. Gale was born Feb. 19, 1920 in Piedmont, Mo., the son of Odia and Mary Elizabeth "Bessie" Allison Singleton. Gale's family moved to Iowa in 1929 and lived around Toolesboro until 1941. He married Lois Milligan on Jan. 11, 1941 in Muscatine. Gale worked on Louisa County road construction for two years and worked on numerous farms. After working at the Iowa Ordnance Plant for two years, he was inducted into military service in 1942. Gale served nine months in the 102nd Division of the U.S. Army and then transferred to the United States Army Air Force where he worked on B-29s as an electrician. After serving 3 years and 17 days in the military, Gale worked 10 years for Barker Poultry Equipment, two years at J.I. Case in Bettendorf, five years as a Raliegh salesman and then 18 years at Thatcher Plastic Packaging in Muscatine before retiring in 1982. Gale enjoyed traveling during the winter months and was a longtime member of the National Rifle Association. An avid hunter and fisherman, Gale was also a past member of the Iowa and Missouri Archeology Society and of the National and Iowa Trappers Association. Survivors include his wife, Lois; a daughter, Sharon and Don Wood of Sperry; a son, David and Shelly Singleton of Wapello; five grandchildren, Jeff Underwood, Amanda Wood, Shad Singleton, Sara Maddux and Seth Singleton; four great-grandchildren, Alexis Harris, Schae Singleton, Tate Singleton and Wyatt Singleton and his sister Wanda Peck of Wapello. Gale was preceded in death by his parents.
