Howard Stock LONE TREE, Iowa - Howard E. Stock, 88, Lone Tree, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, at his home after an extended illness. Services: 1:30 p.m. today, Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services, Lone Tree. Lyle Beaver will officiate the services. Casket bearers are Kurt Karnsted, Dick Elliott, Jack Larew, Keith Rayner, Robert Pennebaker and William Schlapkohl. Honorary casket bearers are Elmer Gallaway, Pat Wade, Gary Smothers, Harry McGrath, Dan Duffey and Lowell Baker. Burial will be at the Lone Tree Cemetery with military rites provided by the Lone Tree American Legion John L. Mumm Post 457. After the burial, a gathering will be held at the Lone Tree American Legion. Memorials may be made to the Lone Tree Fire and Rescue, Iowa City Hospice, American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association. Mr. Stock was born March 4, 1917, in Lone Tree, the son of William F. and Fredericka Rossman Stock. He married Jean Musser on Oct. 6, 1940, in Burlington. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II from October 1942 to November 1945. He served in the Pacific and was in the first wave to hit the beach of both the island of Leyte and in the Philippines and on the island of Okinawa. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge for direct contact with the enemy and three Purple Hearts, two for shrapnel in the leg and back and one for a gunshot wound through his mouth and lungs. He also received a Bronze Star, a Gold Star, Good Conduct Medal, the U.S. Presidential Unit Citation and the Philippine Presidential Citation. He was an independent oil jobber for 22 years, selling Kerr McGee Oil Products. He was a member of the John L. Mumm Post 457 American Legion, serving as past commander; was a lifetime member of Abner Lodge No. 535, serving as past master of the Lodge; member of Lone Tree Chamber of Commerce for several years; Lone Tree Fire Department for 25 years and retired fire chief; member of the Veteran's Trail in Coralville; charter member of the 96th Infantry Division; and was an active member of the D.A.V. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Meredith Ann Meyer of Lone Tree and Meta Phelps and husband Garry of Palmdale, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Rick Meyer and Steve Meyer and wife Michelle, all of Crowley, Texas, Scott Meyer of Lone Tree, Sarah Phelps of Big Sky, Mont. and Tim Phelps of Westlake Village, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Elmer, Harry and Gilbert; and three sisters, Ester Jensen, Hazel Kutcher and Wilma Idle.
