Ray was born on a farm south of Ames, May 8, 1925, to Albert and Mabel (Brown) Lawson. He married the love of his life, Lillian Rose Sturtz, on February 14, 1954 and from this union, Steve, Gloria, Donna and Ralph were born. Ray was a hard-working man of many talents and interests. Over the years, he had been employed as a wrecker driver, body shop mechanic and auto electrician for a variety of businesses including Earl's Garage and Ames Auto Electric. He retired in 1990, after 30 years of working for the Iowa DOT.

Ray enjoyed boating, camping, auto racing and, although the family didn't have a lot, he always gave his kids camping trip vacations. Those adventures to Minnesota and Arkansas were the highlight of the kids' lives and they have very fond memories of their dad.

Ray is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lillian Lawson of Ames; sons, Steve Lawson and Ralph Lawson both of Ames; daughters, Gloria (George) Meiborg of Boone, Iowa and Donna Lawson of Ankeny, Iowa; grandchildren, Heather (Harold) Scharm, Jenny Cruz, Mike (Juana) Meiborg and Kevin Kuhn; great-grandchildren, Gloria Cruz, Stella Cruz, Daenerys Meiborg, Cameron Meiborg, Kamron Kuhn, Kaleb Kuhn and Malachy Kuhn; as well as extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Mabel; brother, Delmar Lawson; grandson, Brian Kuhn; son-in-law, Tim Bailey; and three half-brothers, Howard, Russell and Ted Schultz.

Memorials may be given to the family or to the First Christian Church in Ames.
